Civica builds software that runs essential public services, supporting local government, the NHS, housing associations, and financial institutions—services millions depend on daily. We are a company deeply rooted in the public sector, tackling meaningful problems with a commitment to sustainable software development for the next decade.

The Role

The Field Engineering team, part of Platform Enablement, works directly with product engineering teams to reduce friction in building, releasing, operating, and supporting services. This role focuses on improving developer experience, delivery standards, and ensuring engineering efforts align with product outcomes rather than infrastructure or support challenges.

As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will collaborate with product teams to assess their current engineering practices, guide adoption of platform standards, and implement practical improvements in areas like development workflows, automated checks, build/release processes, observability, and production readiness. The ideal candidate combines strong engineering judgment with a collaborative mindset to drive measurable progress while fostering trust in platform practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and improve product engineering teams’ delivery practices, identifying opportunities for sustainable enhancements.
  • Promote adoption of Platform Enablement standards, including CI/CD, automated testing, and trunk-based development.
  • Guide teams in modernizing workflows, build pipelines, and release processes for safer, faster, and more consistent software delivery.
  • Provide hands-on engineering support to remove blockers and ensure teams can achieve their goals.
  • Translate platform guidance into actionable improvements tailored to each team’s context.
  • Advocate for best practices in observability, monitoring, and secure software delivery.
  • Gather feedback from teams to refine platform standards and address recurring challenges.

Requirements

  • Expertise in CI/CD, automated testing, and trunk-based development strategies.
  • Deep knowledge of build, versioning, promotion, and deployment concepts.
  • Proficiency in observability, monitoring, and operational readiness principles.
  • Experience with secure software delivery and shift-left security controls.
  • Understanding of infrastructure, environment, and configuration management.
  • Strong focus on improving developer experience and engineering enablement.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders and coach teams without direct authority.

Benefits

Civica is passionate about its mission to improve public services through technology. Employees enjoy:

  • Work-Life Balance: 25 days annual leave + bank holidays, with the option to buy up to 10 extra days. Up to 3 additional days off for volunteering.
  • Financial Security: Pension contributions (5% employer match), income protection (up to 75% salary cover), life assurance (4x salary tax-free lump sum), and critical illness cover (ÂŁ25,000 extendable to dependents).
  • Health & Wellbeing: Private medical insurance, health cash plan, dental insurance, and affinity groups for employee-led communities.
  • Inclusivity: Civica is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds and supporting accommodations during recruitment.

Civica is a massive, globally dominant GovTech and public sector software powerhouse fundamentally designed to digitize and streamline critical citizen services. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in London, United Kingdom, the company operates as the digital backbone for over 5,000 public bodies across local and central government, healthcare, education, and social housing. Under the hood, Civica leverages advanced cloud solutions, artificial intelligence, and proprietary platforms (like Civica Multivue for Master Data Management) to securely process, govern, and distribute the data of over 100 million citizens globally. Their primary target audience spans massive government agencies, national healthcare trusts, global school districts, and public safety organizations that desperately need to modernize fragmented legacy systems, ensure strict regulatory compliance, and deliver seamless digital experiences to the public. What sets Civica apart in the highly complex IT services landscape is its sheer scale and deep domain expertise; recently acquired by Blackstone for a staggering $2.5 billion, they do not just build software—they engineer the invisible, mission-critical infrastructure that keeps society functioning securely and efficiently on a daily basis.
