Senior Data Engineer (Analytics) at Machinify

As a Senior Data Engineer (Analytics), you will transform messy operational data into actionable insights for business leaders. You’ll collaborate closely with finance, operations, and client-facing teams to develop certified models, precise metric definitions, and reports that drive decision-making. Our analytics warehouse consolidates data from four platforms into a unified measurement model across diverse client workflows.

This role emphasizes data modeling and measurement over pipeline development, though pipeline skills are beneficial. Expect hands-on work with dbt, SQL, and Power BI, frequent stakeholder interactions, and the ability to deliver dashboards that are both accurate and insightful.

What You’ll Do

• Run discovery with business stakeholders to identify real needs and translate them into clear acceptance criteria for development.
• Model noisy healthcare operational data into certified dimensional models using Databricks (bronze → silver → gold architecture) in dbt and SQL. Resolve discrepancies between conflicting data sources, which is a core part of this role.
• Own metric definitions to ensure consistency—one measure, one definition, one place—with documentation accessible to non-engineers. Consolidate multiple re-derived metrics into a governed semantic layer.
• Build and own the visualization layer using Power BI semantic models, dashboards, and paginated reports, including monitoring for refresh health and semantic-model accuracy. Ensure visualizations are tailored to the question and easily interpretable by executives.
• Own observability for your models, including freshness and latency detection, statistical anomaly detection, value-drift monitoring, data tests, regression guards, and CI checks to prevent recurring defects.
• Own orchestration for your builds, including dbt Cloud job design, Airflow DAGs, scheduling, dependency ordering, and incremental runs.
• Write comprehensive documentation, including design documents, model documentation, CI-enforced knowledge bases, and business-readable handoff packets to ensure seamless knowledge transfer.
• Automate recurring work by codifying workflows into repeatable, testable, and AI-assisted processes. Leverage LLMs to streamline tasks and reduce manual effort.

What You Bring

• 6+ years of experience in analytics engineering, BI engineering, data engineering, or business analysis, with production ownership of models and metrics.
• Expertise in SQL and strong dimensional modeling instincts to identify and resolve grain mismatches before execution.
• Production-level experience with dbt, including models, tests, macros, exposures, documentation, and CI/CD pipelines. Opinions on project structure and the ability to defend them.
• Hands-on experience with a cloud lakehouse or warehouse, preferably Databricks and Spark SQL; experience with Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift is transferable.
• Real visualization talent with ownership of a BI semantic layer and reports. Strong preference for Power BI and DAX; alternatives include Looker/LookML, Tableau, MetricFlow, or Cube. Bring examples of dashboards you’ve designed and explain what you omitted.
• Stakeholder fluency to facilitate requirements conversations with non-technical owners, translate vague complaints into testable definitions, explain data problems as business risks, and communicate when metrics are incorrect without alienating stakeholders.
• A reconciliation reflex to investigate and resolve discrepancies between numbers rather than averaging, escalating, or blindly trusting newer data.
• Git and pull-request discipline as standard practice, not overhead.
• Python for tasks where it’s appropriate (API calls, file parsing, statistics, report generation), with the judgment to use SQL when it’s more suitable.
• Comfort with high autonomy in a fast, async, Slack-first environment. Decide within your lane and inform others rather than seeking permission.
• Strong writing skills, as much of your impact will be through documents, definitions, and charts that stakeholders read without your direct input.

Bonus Points For

• Experience with healthcare data, including claims (837/835/UB04), DRG and coding review, payment integrity, provider contracts, or revenue cycle.
• Knowledge of data contracts, schema enforcement, or ODCS-style governance, including quality gating in CI.
• Experience with Databricks Unity Catalog, lineage, and cost/DBU accountability.
• Experience with paginated reporting, SharePoint/Excel delivery, or other business-specific formats.
• Experience working alongside AI coding agents and reviewing their outputs against a contract you’ve written.
