The Role

You’ll set the technical direction for backend development, leveraging deep programming expertise to design and build scalable, reliable web application systems. Collaborate with AI coding agents, directing and reviewing their output while maintaining quality standards. The ideal candidate has experience in application design, system architecture, and driving adoption of new languages, tools, and agentic development practices.

You’ll join a high-visibility engineering team trusted to solve complex, high-stakes problems using AI, data, and software systems. Your code impacts customers and future product lines. Cross-functional collaboration influences product direction, engages with customers, and owns systems affecting millions of lives.

What You’ll Do

• Deepen your understanding of healthcare claims and payments domains
• Act as a Developer Coach/Multiplier—experienced in Java, Scala, and/or Rust, building production-grade services, setting standards, mentoring others, and elevating team programming maturity
• Serve as the backend voice in cross-team planning and execution
• Contribute to new product development of complex in-browser applications, ensuring extensibility, scalability, and security
• Balance customer-facing features with technical debt cleanup to maintain software sustainability
• Architect and implement complex applications applying ML techniques to large data volumes, simplifying labor-intensive processes through good user experience
• Design systems that deliver high-performance, reliable applications
• Integrate agentic engineering practices into daily workflows and help the team adopt them effectively

What You Bring

• 8+ years of backend programming experience (full-stack experience highly desired)
• Proven experience designing and shipping customer-facing web application products, with a focus on external user features
• Meaningful experience with Java or Scala; Rust highly desired
• Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems that run reliably on cloud services at scale (high throughput, high availability)
• Ability to write a Technical Design Document (TDD) that peers and product leads trust, translating ambiguous product intent into concrete backend design
• A product and user-driven mindset, connecting technical decisions to user outcomes
• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with engineering peers, senior PMs, ML/DS partners, and leadership
• Pragmatic problem-solving with a strong systems instinct, addressing root causes
• Hands-on experience with agentic engineering tools and workflows in production settings
• Experience reading and improving complex code, owning code quality
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills in a high-growth, high-stakes environment
• Comfort with complexity and curiosity to define paths forward
• Nice to have: Technical leadership on Rust best practices (idioms, safety, performance) as the team scales adoption
• BS or MS in Computer Science (or equivalent experience)
