Epic Kids is the leading digital reading platform for kids 12 and under, trusted globally by millions of children, educators, and families. Their mission is to foster a lifelong love of reading through unlimited access to high-quality books, videos, and educational content.
At Epic, you’ll join a collaborative, fast-paced global team dedicated to building impactful products for children’s education and literacy.
About the Role
You will own Epic’s native Android app, the primary platform for kids to access books on Android phones, tablets, and Chromebooks. This is a large, mature codebase written in Kotlin with some Java and XML UI layouts. You’ll work independently and closely with Android, iOS, backend, and web engineers, as well as the US engineering team.
What You’ll Do
Own and evolve the Android app across phones, tablets, and Chromebooks.
Own the reading experience, including in-house page rendering, page-flip animations, zoom and gestures, and Read-to-Me audio synced with word highlighting.
Manage offline reading features, including encrypted downloads, background work, and local storage. Handle Google Play Billing subscriptions and the Play Store release pipeline.
Drive performance, stability, and quality by optimizing startup time, memory usage, ANRs, crashes, and test coverage.
Modernize the codebase by gradually moving legacy Java and RxJava code forward without breaking the live app. Transition to Jetpack Compose UIs where applicable.
Over time, take on some iOS/Swift work.
What We’re Looking For
4–6 years of experience building and shipping native Android apps.
Strong proficiency in Kotlin and comfort working with mixed Kotlin/Java code.
Deep experience with the Android View system, Fragments, and custom Views, including custom drawing, animation, and touch handling.
Expertise in reactive and async programming, including RxJava 2 in production and Kotlin coroutines.
Experience with dependency injection, MVP or MVVM architecture, and networking using Retrofit and OkHttp.
Local persistence with Room/SQLite, including schema migrations, and background work with WorkManager.
Knowledge of Google Play Billing and the release pipeline, including Gradle build variants, app signing, CI (Jenkins or similar), Play Console tracks, and staged rollouts.
Testing experience with JUnit, Mockito or MockK, Robolectric, and Espresso.
A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to Have
Experience with media handling using ExoPlayer/Media3, MediaPlayer, and syncing audio to text.
Handling encrypted media and offline content storage.
Experience with Jetpack Compose and the ability to determine when it fits alongside an existing View-based codebase.
Familiarity with performance tooling like Perfetto, Android Studio profilers, LeakCanary, New Relic, or Crashlytics.
Experience with kids’ or education apps and knowledge of children’s privacy rules (COPPA).
Interest in cross-platform mobile development and some familiarity with iOS/Swift.

Epic! (operating under getepic.com, legally Epic! Creations, Inc.) is the premier, enterprise-grade digital reading platform, children's educational media pioneer, and interactive EdTech orchestration powerhouse engineered to act as the definitive, high-visibility digital library, student performance tracking, and personalized literacy layer for millions of children, parents, and elementary school teachers globally. Co-founded in 2013 by digital media and gaming veterans Suren Markosian and Kevin Donahue, the company completely eliminates the severe systemic friction of modern childhood literacy development—where families struggle with high physical book costs, and schools face fragmented reading tracking resources alongside a sharp decline in student reading engagement—by deploying an immersive, high-velocity reading engagement matrix. Moving far beyond traditional, passive e-book reader utilities or static school PDF binders, Epic! natively unifies a curated catalog of over 40,000 high-quality books, audiobooks, learning videos, and read-to-me titles from 250+ top publishers (including HarperCollins, Macmillan, and National Geographic Kids) alongside gamified badge achievements, personalized quizzes, and a dedicated classroom insights dashboard. Operating at massive scale with accessibility spanning over 90% of elementary schools across the United States, the platform supports over 75 million young readers. Highlighting its category-defining momentum, Epic! was acquired by global digital education powerhouse Byju's for $500 million to anchor its international consumer expansion strategy. Under the hood, its technology framework utilizes advanced behavioral content recommendation loops, lightweight real-time reading progress telemetry tracking, interactive word-highlighting audio sync tools, and copper-bottomed COPPA compliance architectures built to manage high-volume concurrent streaming traffic with absolute safety and minimal latency. What sets Epic! apart is its uncompromising dedication to replacing passive screen time with absolute educational predictability, rich visual and textual storytelling, and structural classroom integration; by bridging the gap between performance-intensive relational media storage and immediate, child-first learning curiosity, the enterprise remains a definitive cornerstone of modern algorithmic EdTech and global literacy transformation.
