About the Role: This position is led by Emily, who specializes in embedded payments and fintech solutions, with a focus on healthcare and wellness. Payments at Jane processes billions of dollars annually, impacting tens of thousands of clinics and their patients. The role involves managing risk, ensuring trust, clarity, and decisiveness in a scalable risk engine while maintaining Jane’s exceptional customer experience.
The role will oversee the operating system—people, processes, and technology—that supports a balanced risk engine without compromising customer experience.
What Impact We’re Looking for You to Make:
Merchant risk policy: Develop onboarding criteria, verification standards, handle exceptions, define escalation paths, and conduct ongoing merchant monitoring.
Jane's stated risk appetite: Collaborate with Legal, Finance, and the VP to establish and maintain risk parameters.
Portfolio losses and risk reporting: Monitor loss rate, approval rate, time-to-decision, dispute win rate, and support finance in budgeting and forecasting losses.
Transaction monitoring strategy: Design transaction rules, risk flags, review processes, thresholds, time-to-decision, and manage the false positive rate.
Dispute strategy and win rate: Improve win rates for customers and prevent disputes through strategic planning.
Escalation, hold, and offboarding decisions: Make decisions with authority but know when to seek executive or legal sign-off.
Fraud detection: Develop a keen sense for identifying fraudulent merchants or changes in merchant behavior.
Card network and Stripe compliance: Collaborate with Legal and the VP to ensure Jane’s compliance with obligations and customer awareness.
Systems and tooling strategy: Be an AI-forward thinker, reimagining the tech stack and manual processes into AI-native systems with agentic workflows. Ensure human oversight where necessary.
What Experience We Need:
6+ years in payments risk, preferably in a leadership or highly cross-functional role, with experience in embedded payments at a software platform carrying liability.
Expertise in payments, including acquiring, underwriting, chargebacks, and transaction monitoring.
Familiarity with Stripe, especially Stripe Connect, or a comparable platform, including understanding its capabilities and limitations.
Ability to write clear policies that people follow and communicate complex decisions compassionately to clinic owners.
Strong data skills to build your own reporting, with experience in SQL, Stripe Sigma, or similar tools.
Comfortable being the sole person in this role initially and excited about building a function from the ground up.
If you don’t meet every qualification but are passionate about this role, we still encourage you to apply.
