Retention Specialist
Job Description
Key Skills Required
Master these to land this role
Want to know if you're a match for this job?
We are looking for a sharp, fast, brand-obsessed Retention Specialist to own the voice of a high-growth consumer technology client. You will write the email and SMS copy that carries the program, direct the creative that goes with it, and keep the marketing calendar moving as output scales.
The list starts near 20,000 and grows fast behind a significant acquisition investment, volume ramps to 40–60 emails a month, and deepening segmentation multiplies the number of versions behind every send. Most of what you write is automated — lead capture, welcome series, first-conversion and activation sequences — and then loyalty and repeat purchase programming on top of it. The program runs on enterprise tooling such as Braze, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Iterable, or Customer.io.
This is a copy-led role. You will write more than you manage, and the quality of your writing is the primary thing we are hiring for. The ability to hold a consistent voice across a lot of output is essential.
You should apply if this sounds like you
- You are a copywriter who happens to work in lifecycle marketing. You can explain a technical product simply, write a subject line that earns the open, and make a subscription upgrade feel like a good idea rather than a sales pitch.
- You have 3–5+ years of experience writing marketing copy, with meaningful time in email, SMS, or lifecycle marketing. A strong portfolio matters as much as the years.
- You write excellent short-form copy — subject lines, preheaders, body, CTAs, SMS — and you can show work where your copy moved a number.
- You can make consumer technology, software, or a digital subscription feel clear and desirable without jargon. Experience writing for a SaaS, app, or connected-device brand is a strong plus.
- You have written the funnel: lead capture and opt-in copy, welcome series, first-conversion and onboarding sequences, and subscription activation messaging.
- You have written loyalty, rewards, and win-back programming, and you understand that driving repeat purchase and long-term value is a core outcome of this role.
- You are comfortable working from a segmentation strategy, writing distinct copy for distinct audiences rather than one message for everyone.
- You can direct design. You write clear creative briefs, give specific and useful feedback on layout, hierarchy, and imagery, and you know when a design is not serving the copy.
- You are fluent in Figma — you review and approve designs there, leave actionable comments, and keep versions straight.
- You own a marketing calendar with confidence: you can hold a high-volume calendar, flag conflicts early, and keep a lot of moving pieces on schedule.
- You are detail-obsessed about proofing, links, personalization tokens, and brand consistency. Typos in a send genuinely bother you.
- You take feedback well and iterate quickly, and you are comfortable presenting and defending your creative choices to a client.
- A working knowledge of an enterprise ESP (Braze, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Iterable, Customer.io, or comparable) is a plus; you do not need to be the one building, but you should understand what is possible.
A day in the life
- Write the email and SMS copy for campaigns, flows, and automations across your client's program, from lead capture through activation, loyalty, and repeat purchase.
- Develop and maintain the client's marketing calendar, sequencing campaigns against the strategy your Associate Director sets and flagging capacity risks before they become problems.
- Write creative briefs for the design team and give clear, specific direction on what each asset needs to do.
- Review and approve designs in Figma, leaving actionable feedback and shepherding assets to final.
- Own the brand voice and the copy guidelines for your client, keeping tone consistent as output scales and segmentation multiplies the number of versions.
- Partner with the CRM Specialist to make sure copy, segmentation logic, and dynamic content line up in the build.
- Proof every send before it goes out — copy, links, personalization, rendering.
- Review performance with your Associate Director and translate what you learn into your next round of copy tests.
