Engineering Manager (Leadership Role) at Sunrise Group (Dreem Health)

Sunrise Group is building the future of sleep health by combining breakthrough technology with expert care. Founded in 2015, the company started with a chin sensor for at-home sleep diagnosis, validated through clinical research and cleared by the FDA. Today, Sunrise Group has evolved into a 170-person digital health company operating across all 50 states, offering reimbursed care through Dreem Health, its digital sleep clinic. The company designs advanced diagnostic and treatment solutions, delivering care directly to patients.

You will join Sunrise (Dreem Health) at a pivotal moment as the engineering organization scales, requiring a second Engineering Manager to lead 6 to 10 engineers across 2 to 3 product squads. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will own your squads—people, staffing, and delivery—while sharing product outcomes with Product counterparts. Each squad has a Tech Lead and a Principal Engineer to support technical feasibility and task breakdown.

As a technical manager, you will stay close to the code and designs to ask the right questions, push great engineering, and help your squads keep raising the bar. You will lead and develop your team, run 1:1s, give honest feedback, and own performance and promotion decisions, aligning with the engineering ladder.

What you will do:

• Lead and develop a team of 6 to 10 engineers across 2 to 3 product squads. Run 1:1s, give honest feedback, own performance and promotion decisions, and build development plans against the engineering ladder.
• Own delivery for your squads: manage commitments, team workload, and ensure sustainable delivery. Challenge scope and dates with Product, with a mandate to refuse unsustainable commitments.
• Protect long-term velocity by owning capacity allocation for tech health and platform quality.
• Hire: partner with Talent Acquisition to source, interview, and close engineers. Conduct technical interviews and maintain a high hiring bar.
• Raise the technical bar by staying close to the code and designs, especially for high-risk changes, new patterns, design docs, and review quality. Utilize AI tooling to navigate the codebase efficiently and help squads improve engineering practices.
• Work closely with Tech Leads and the Principal Engineer, challenging ambition and approach, unblocking them, and escalating structural risks early.
• Champion modern, AI-augmented engineering practices and continuous improvement of team workflows.
• Stay deeply immersed in product and business context, managing stakeholder relationships, participating in squad rituals, and handling cross-squad dependencies.

What you will bring:

• At least 3 years managing software engineers in a dedicated management role.
• 5+ years as a software engineer before transitioning into management, including senior-level ownership of production systems.
• A track record of shipping and operating production web products with enough technical depth to challenge designs and estimates credibly. The company stack includes React, Django, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Experience partnering closely with Product and Design in an empowered-squad model.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted engineering tooling, and a clear opinion on where it adds value and where it does not.
• Fluent in English (working language); French is a plus.
• A genuine interest in sleep, health, and helping people better understand and improve their well-being.
