Kit is the email marketing platform designed for creators—coaches, YouTubers, authors, and podcasters—to grow their audience, automate email marketing, and sell digital products. The company is on a mission to help creators earn $1 billion using their platform and operates 100% remotely with a global team.

The Role

Kit is expanding, and so are its legal complexities. We are seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to navigate these challenges with speed, clarity, and commercial acumen. You will serve as the in-house legal subject matter expert, partnering closely with the executive team to lead product legal strategy and execution—focusing on privacy, data, AI, compliance, commercial contracts, customer security requirements, and scalable legal support for teams. A key priority is addressing the growing volume of privacy questions, particularly around the newer product, Subscriber Signals, by building practical, repeatable systems for timely guidance at scale.

You will help shape the legal foundation of a fast-growing tech company with multiple revenue streams, including SaaS, digital commerce, paid recommendations, and advertising, and a rapidly expanding platform for creators. Your role involves developing a deep understanding of Kit, SparkLoop, Subscriber Signals, and how creators derive value from the connected ecosystem of apps and tools. You will be central to complex, cross-functional challenges where product, business, and legal strategies intersect—all aimed at helping creators build more valuable businesses.

Your Support System

You will report to the Chief Operating Officer and collaborate regularly with leaders across product, sales, finance, and people operations. You will own the core legal work in-house, minimize reliance on outside counsel, and determine when specialized external counsel is necessary.

What You’ll Do

  • First Week: Get up to speed on Kit’s business model, goals, and products. Learn about SparkLoop, Subscriber Signals, and how creators benefit from the connected ecosystem. Meet key stakeholders and external counsel. Review common legal agreements, privacy questions, and customer security requests to identify risks, opportunities, ambiguities, and recurring work that can be streamlined.

  • First Month: Gain a comprehensive understanding of active data processing, privacy, AI, and other legal initiatives. Develop a “what’s on deck” view of upcoming legal needs. Map recurring privacy support questions, particularly around Subscriber Signals, and begin designing a scalable intake, guidance, and escalation system. Partner with Sales, Sponsorships, Security, Product, and Engineering to accelerate progress without compromising quality. Take ownership of GDPR and data compliance vetting, and establish a clear process for responding to customer security questionnaires.

  • First Six Months: Become the go-to legal partner for the business, especially for product, engineering, security, and GTM teams. Build scalable systems, such as playbooks, templates, intake processes, and self-service guidance, for addressing recurring privacy, data-use, and compliance questions. Collaborate throughout the product lifecycle on initiatives and feature releases, with a focus on Subscriber Signals and the connected ecosystem. Prioritize major legal risks, reduce unnecessary reliance on outside counsel, and streamline legal workflows to enhance speed, confidence, and self-service.

  • First Year: Help Kit achieve higher legal maturity in privacy, compliance, product counsel, commercial contracts, and security support. Establish durable systems that enable teams to answer common questions independently while escalating higher-risk matters appropriately. Foster a mindset where privacy, data, and compliance are strategic enablers—not just checkboxes—and significantly reduce reliance on outside counsel for in-house manageable work.

What Will Set You Up for Success

Skills

  • Deep expertise in data, compliance, and product—this will be your primary focus.
  • Strong ability to navigate U.S. and European data privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), including familiarity with data controller vs. processor distinctions and their impact on vendor and product decisions.
  • Ability to translate privacy and compliance requirements into scalable playbooks, templates, intake processes, and self-service guidance.
  • Experience supporting customer security questionnaires and effectively partnering with security, sales, product, and engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II and the legal, privacy, and customer requirements associated with it, even if you haven’t directly managed a certification process.
  • Understanding of intellectual property law, particularly related to brand, content, and software.
  • Understanding of commercial contracts—you’ll become Kit’s primary point of contact for these.
  • Clear communication and trusted advisor skills—able to simplify complexity and help others make informed decisions.

Experiences

  • Experience as in-house counsel at a tech company or serving a tech portfolio at a top-tier firm known for working with startups (e.g., Fenwick & West, Cooley).
  • A J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and active membership in good standing with a State Bar Association.

Traits

  • Strategic thinker who views legal as a lever, not a blocker.
  • Deeply curious and business-oriented—you start by understanding goals, then explore the smartest paths to achieve them.
  • Collaborative partner who can navigate conflict productively.
  • Deep belief that creator success is our success—you consider both Kit and our customers in every recommendation.
  • A “how might we” problem-solver who finds creative, business-aligned solutions to legal challenges.

What Won’t Set You Up for Success

  • Needing a team of in-house peers or co-counsel to pressure-test every decision—you’ll be the sole in-house legal expert, with outside counsel available as needed.
  • A strongly risk-averse or “no-before-yes” mindset—we need you to help us move forward, not just stop us from tripping.
  • Thinking in a legal vacuum—if you’re not factoring in our goals, numbers, or creators, your advice won’t resonate.
  • Struggling with speed or ownership—if you prefer long timelines or wait to be told what to do, this won’t be the right fit. We move quickly and expect initiative, problem-spotting, and solution-driving.

Working Hours and Location

Kit is 100% remote with team members worldwide. For this role, we are looking for someone located in the United States.

Compensation + Perks + Benefits

Kit offers standardized salaries based on position, regardless of location. This role is an individual contributor level 4 ($227,000) or 5 ($252,000). Additional perks and benefits include:

  • Profit Sharing
  • Kit equity
  • 401k with a 5% match
  • Health insurance coverage (up to $2,100/month for medical premiums, with dental and vision fully covered)
  • $2,000 equipment allowance for the first two years, $1,000 every following two years
  • Individual learning and development budget of $3,500/year
  • Gender affirming benefits
  • Childcare benefit up to $3,000 annually through JOON
  • 20 days of paid time off per year
  • After-tax bonus of $1,000 for taking five consecutive days of fully unplugged vacation
  • 10 paid holidays per year
  • 2 weeks of paid sick time per year, including mental health and well-being days
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave and flexible scheduling in your child’s first year
  • Up to six weeks of paid bereavement, medical, and disaster leave after six months of employment (2 weeks paid in the first six months)
  • Winter Break Closure: Kit closes for a week at the end of December for a collective holiday break
  • Four-week, paid sabbatical after five years with the team
  • Fantastic in-person or virtual retreats with the team twice a year

Exploding Kittens (operating at explodingkittens.com) is a tabletop game and entertainment company designed to bring playful, social experiences to physical gatherings. Founded in 2015 by Matthew Inman of *The Oatmeal* and Elan Lee, a former Xbox game designer, the company reimagines casual gaming with a mission to inspire connection and laughter. Unlike traditional board games, Exploding Kittens transforms simple mechanics into a high-stakes, kitty-themed twist on Russian Roulette, where players draw cards until an exploding kitten dooms the unlucky participant. The game’s rapid, accessible gameplay—combined with its humorous, shareable design—makes it a standout in the party game space. This allows families, friends, and game night enthusiasts to enjoy lighthearted competition without complex rules or long setup times. Backed by $50 million in funding across three rounds, the company has scaled from a Kickstarter campaign that exceeded $1 million to a recognized player in the entertainment industry, with revenue reaching $19.2 million.
