About Owner: Owner is the AI-native system local business owners use to succeed, starting with restaurants. We’re building the system that replaces the many tools owners use to run their business, powering everything from the restaurant’s website, online ordering, CRM, POS, and more.
Product Philosophy: Most small business software makes owners do the work to achieve sales and profit growth. Owner does the work for them agentically. Our system drives demand, converts it, and helps operators run their business day to day. Using Owner should feel like having a team of great operators, engineers, and marketers working for you.
Our Vision: We’re starting by helping independent restaurants succeed online. However, our solution isn’t limited to restaurants—most local businesses face similar challenges. Huge tech corporations are taking their customers, bleeding their profits, and making survival difficult. Once we perfect the solution for restaurants, we’ll scale it to every other local business type. Our future vision includes tens of millions of local business owners using our technology to thrive in the digital age.
Our Traction: Since 2020, we’ve generated tens of millions in revenue and processed over 1 billion dollars in online orders. 1 in 5 Americans have used an Owner.com website. We’ve helped over 20,000 restaurant owners, saving them nearly $200 million in fees.
Our Team: Our team is now in the low hundreds, with top talent from companies like Shopify, HubSpot, DoorDash, ServiceTitan, Rappi, Faire, and Stripe. We’re scaling rapidly in 2026 to match our customer growth.
Where We Work: Owner is a remote-first, global company headquartered in San Francisco, with a sales hub in Toronto. Most roles are distributed globally, but some prioritize in-person collaboration at our office locations.
Why We’re Hiring: We’re seeking our first Senior Corporate Counsel to serve as embedded legal counsel for Product and Engineering. This role focuses on product counseling, payments, fintech regulatory work, privacy, and AI governance, advising on AI-powered guest experiences and embedded payments infrastructure. You’ll report to the Head of Legal and be an early hire with significant ownership over compliant, well-designed product development.
The role is remote and open to candidates anywhere in the United States, with a preference for those based in the SF Bay Area or NYC.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as embedded legal counsel to Product, Engineering, and Payments teams, advising on new features, AI-powered tools, pricing models, and payments integrations from concept through launch.
- Own legal review of AI-related products and features, including training data sourcing, model risk, algorithmic decision-making, and required disclosures.
- Advise on regulatory compliance for payments and fintech-adjacent products, including embedded payments, money movement, card network rules, and PCI-DSS considerations.
- Build and maintain privacy program elements relevant to product, such as data collection and retention practices, consumer disclosures, and compliance with CCPA/CPRA and other state privacy laws.
- Monitor emerging AI regulation (state AI laws, FTC guidance, and international frameworks) and translate it into practical, actionable product guidance.
- Draft and negotiate technology, data, and AI vendor agreements, including data and model licensing terms.
- Advise on digital accessibility compliance for product and engineering (e.g., ADA Title III risk, WCAG conformance) and counsel teams on accessible design before launch.
- Partner with the General Counsel and business teams on regulatory risk assessments for new markets, products, and features.
- Build scalable playbooks, templates, and self-serve tools so product and engineering teams can move quickly with the right guardrails.
- Support incident response for privacy or AI-related issues, coordinating across engineering, security, and communications.
- Manage outside counsel on discrete regulatory, payments, or AI matters as needed.
