R&D Attorney at GC AI

About The Role

As an R&D Attorney, you will shape the products, features, and AI experiences that legal teams rely on every day. You will combine legal expertise, product judgment, and a practical understanding of how legal teams work to define what excellent legal AI looks like. Working alongside engineers as a legal expert, product partner, and advanced user, you will:

• Design legal evaluations, translate real-world workflows into product requirements, test and refine new features, and turn customer feedback into lasting improvements.
• Help decide what we build, set the standard for launch readiness, and shape the future of legal AI for in-house teams.

What You’ll Do

• Design and run rigorous evaluations that define and measure whether our AI-generated work meets the high standards expected by top-tier legal professionals.
• Review and validate product outputs for accuracy, relevance, comprehensiveness, and helpfulness.
• Turn customer feedback into lasting improvements by identifying root causes, determining whether the solution requires a prompt, skill, tool, or broader product change, and creating tests that prevent recurrence.
• Work alongside engineering, product, design, and GTM teams to shape products and features from initial discovery through requirements, prioritization, testing, launch, and ongoing improvement.
• Serve as the legal voice of quality, advocating for precision, consistency, and clarity in AI outputs.
• Operate as a product manager, legal expert, and advanced user by translating real legal workflows and customer needs into clear product requirements, acceptance criteria, and roadmap recommendations.
• Provide domain-specific legal expertise that guides feature development and product roadmap decisions.
• Help build products that lawyers trust and want to use, combining legal judgment, product thinking, customer insight, and hands-on experimentation.

What You've Done

• Law degree and license to practice law.
• 5+ years of legal experience, ideally with meaningful in-house experience.
• Substantive depth in one or more areas of in-house legal work, such as corporate-commercial or transactional law, contract drafting and negotiation, product or regulatory counseling, privacy, compliance, employment, fintech, or litigation work.
• Experience using generative AI for legal work and evaluating generative AI outputs.
• Strong analytical skills, including the ability to design metrics, interpret evaluation results, and turn legal reasoning into logical, repeatable steps.
• Strong cross-functional communication skills, with the ability to work closely with Engineering, Product, and GTM teams.

• You care about user experience, especially how legal professionals interact with and trust AI assistants.
• You have worked closely with software engineers before.
• Ability to design and interpret evaluation metrics and to abstract legal reasoning and processes into logical, repeatable steps.

How We Work Together

GC AI is a distributed company with team members across North America, and soon Europe. We believe that because our business is AI, human connection matters more, not less. We invest in bringing people together through our hub model: regular coworking sessions, customer dinners, team and company offsites.

Team members in the San Francisco Bay Area and Provo, UT (within 50 miles of the office) work together on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. As we grow, we plan to establish permanent offices in more hub cities, and we will look to our team members to help build that in-person culture. We currently hire across the United States and Canada.
