We’re a growing local newsletter company in the Mid-Atlantic, producing daily email newsletters with fun, witty, local storytelling that doesn’t sound like a newspaper. Every weekday at 6am, our readers get local news, events, live music, weather, and stories that make them smile. We don't do stuffy. We do engaging.

We're entering a new growth phase. We're launching several more city newsletters in 2026, and this role will own the written content that makes that possible. We've built a lean team - Ryan plus one brilliant team member in the Philippines who's been with us for five years - and now we need someone to take the writing reins as we scale. We treat our people well, pay them more every year, and give them the time off they need. This is the most important role in our company right now.

We're looking for a Managing Editor. Someone who can own every written word we publish - daily newsletters and blog posts across multiple local markets - and do it in our fun, witty, casual voice. Someone who's comfortable working with AI tools to draft and edit content, then feeding corrections back to keep improving the system.

Responsibilities

  • Produce every daily email newsletter across our local markets (starting with one, growing to 3-5 newsletters per day)
  • Write and publish blog posts for our main website (roughly 5-15 per week across markets)
  • Decide which stories make it into each newsletter using human judgment on top of automated feeds
  • Use our AI writing system to draft, edit, and proofread stories in our style and tone
  • Feed edits back into the AI tool to keep training and improving it over time
  • Monitor breaking local news and adjust newsletters late in the day when stories break
  • Coordinate with the social media team by sharing content strategy and direction (no social media content production)
  • Ensure every weekday newsletter is accurate, fully proofread and ready to publish by 6:00 a.m. US Eastern Time, with strong editorial coverage and no avoidable factual errors or typos.

Your hours are flexible as long as the newsletter goes out at 6am US Eastern every weekday. You can largely work your own local daytime hours (e.g. starting 8am London time works well) as long as you can also do a late check for breaking stories the previous evening or early morning Eastern.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you need:

  • Excellent English writing skills - creative, witty, casual tone (not traditional newspaper style)
  • Hands-on experience using AI/LLM tools for content drafting, editing or research, combined with the editorial judgment to identify factual errors, weak reasoning and tone problems.
  • Strong attention to detail (no typos, no factual errors)
  • Ability to reliably hit a daily 6am US Eastern publishing deadline

Brownie points for:

  • Persuasive copywriting skills (for potentially helping with newsletter ads)
  • Marketing experience or ability to spot content opportunities that can be monetized
  • Master's degree in English (or local equivalent)
  • Journalism experience or degree

We're looking for someone detail-oriented, creative, and witty. Someone who writes in a fun, casual, joke-friendly voice rather than a stiff newspaper voice. The ideal person is proactive - able to come up with their own content ideas, not just execute what they're assigned. This is a long-term team member role, not a project-based freelance gig. You'll need to adapt quickly when we launch newsletters in cities you've never heard of, and bring creativity to everything you touch.
