WellTheory is a digital health company dedicated to helping individuals with autoimmune conditions manage their health through personalized care, nutrition guidance, and ongoing coaching. Their mission is to empower members to reduce symptoms, feel better, and live fuller lives while helping employers and payors reduce healthcare spend.

About the Role

Autoimmune disease is often invisible and poorly understood, particularly affecting women. WellTheory focuses on managing these conditions through nutrition and lifestyle-based care alongside medical treatment. The Clinical Research Scientist will build the research function from scratch, designing studies, analyzing data, publishing findings, and translating evidence into better care and commercial impact. This is a hands-on, senior-level role with significant influence over program evolution.

What You'll Do

Study Design and Analysis

  • Design and execute observational studies on member data, including matched cohorts, pre/post analyses, propensity-scored comparisons, and interrupted time series.
  • Analyze medical and pharmacy claims data, covering utilization, biologic/biosimilar trends, and cost of care.
  • Write statistical analysis plans and perform hands-on analysis in Python, R, or SQL, collaborating with the data team for scalability.

Publication and Scientific Presence

  • Publish as first or senior author in peer-reviewed journals read by clinicians, payers, and digital health professionals.
  • Present at conferences such as ACR, DDW, AAD, and AMCP.
  • Lead collaborations with health plans, employers, and academic partners, including protocol development and IRB submissions.
  • Manage all regulatory requirements for studies, including IRB review.

Turning Evidence into Impact

  • Work with care and product teams to integrate findings into updated protocols and personalized member experiences.
  • Shape structured data capture (symptoms, adherence, biomarkers, PROs) to strengthen future studies.
  • Define the autoimmune population and cohort logic.
  • Create white papers and one-pagers for commercial and partnership teams.
  • Serve as the scientific voice in health plan clinical reviews and payer conversations.

You Might Be a Great Fit If You...

  • Have a PhD or equivalent research doctorate in epidemiology, health services research, outcomes research, biostatistics, public health, nutrition science, or a related field. Exceptional MS/MPH candidates with deep industry experience and a strong publication record are also considered.
  • Possess experience applying real-world evidence methods (propensity score matching, difference-in-differences, interrupted time series) to claims data such as MarketScan, Optum, or HealthVerity.
  • Have industry experience in digital health, payers, or life sciences, or a track record of applied, decision-oriented research.
  • Are fluent in Python, R, or SQL.
  • Have a pragmatic approach to evidence, understanding when an RCT is appropriate and how to build rigor from available data.
  • Are familiar with how evidence is used commercially, such as in employer RFPs and health plan clinical reviews.
  • Are comfortable being the sole domain expert and working across clinical, product, and data teams.

This position requires current work authorization in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Bonus Points

  • Experience in autoimmune disease, rheumatology, dermatology, GI, or endocrinology.
  • Familiarity with nutrition and lifestyle interventions as clinical care.
  • Experience at an early- or growth-stage digital health company.
  • Prior experience building a research or evidence function from scratch.
  • Existing relationships with key opinion leaders in autoimmune care.

What We Offer

  • A team that genuinely cares about each other and the members they serve.
  • A fully remote company with an annual retreat.
  • A base salary range of $130,000 – $150,000 with meaningful equity and benefits.

Founded in 2022 by Ellen Rudolph and Wallace Cooper and headquartered in New York, New York, WellTheory bridges the massive divide between conventional symptom-suppressing care and root-cause holistic healing. Under the hood, WellTheory combines clinical oversight, personalized nutrition and lifestyle coaching, symptom tracking, and peer community support tailored to over 100 autoimmune diagnoses—including Hashimoto's, Celiac disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Psoriasis. Backed by $26M+ in venture financing from General Catalyst, 7wire Ventures, Accel, BoxGroup, Lux Capital, and Leaps by Bayer, WellTheory partners with individuals, employers, and health plans to drive measurable clinical symptom reduction, lower total cost of care, and improve long-term quality of life.
