Backend Engineering Manager

At Yazio, we help millions of users every day on their journey to healthy nutrition and greater well-being. We're hiring a Backend Engineering Manager to lead our Backend Team, a small, senior team behind Yazio's API and all of the AI features in the app.

This role is for an engineering manager who has led a team before and enjoys helping experienced engineers take full ownership of their work, including conversations with Product.

This role is 100% remote and open to candidates based in Germany, Spain, Portugal, or the UK.

YOUR MISSION

Our Backend Team works with the product squads across Yazio, including Monetization, Growth, Tracking Experience, Mobile Platform and Web, as well as Internal Tools and our CRM team. As its manager, you'll give the engineers the context and support they need to own their initiatives end to end, from planning through to conversations with each squad.

In your first year, you'll:

• Take ownership of the team's rituals in your first couple of months (stand-ups, refinements, sprint planning, retros, and a bi-weekly written sync) and keep improving how the team works
• Build close working relationships with squad leads and product managers, so backend work is part of each squad's plans from the start of the quarter
• Own the team's part of our OKR process: build the quarterly roadmap with the engineers and keep progress visible to the teams that depend on it
• Grow the team through regular 1:1s, development goals, and timely feedback, and step in early when accountability slips
• Hire for the team as it grows, together with our Talent Acquisition team
• Keep an eye on production: when an issue or outage comes up, make sure it gets to the right person and is resolved

YOUR PROFILE

You'll thrive here if:

• You've led an engineering team with direct reports, and you've helped that team take on new responsibilities or change the way it works
• Before moving into management, you spent several years as a senior backend engineer, so you're comfortable discussing system design, infrastructure, and technical trade-offs with a very experienced team
• You get results through your team: you coach engineers to make decisions and handle stakeholder conversations themselves, and you give them the room to do it
• You're a clear, friendly communicator who stays calm under pressure, including during an outage
• You build strong relationships with other leads and stakeholders, and you hold your ground when someone has a strong opinion while staying open to the best solution
• You have a strong product mindset and connect the team's work to what users and the business need
• You notice when a topic has gone quiet and follow up before it stalls

Bonus points for:

• Leading a team that supports several product squads at the same time
• Working on high-traffic consumer products
• Setting up, or working in, a model where backend engineers are embedded in product squads
• Steering the business with KPIs and running A/B tests to improve them

• Backend: PHP (REST APIs) and Go (async processing and high-concurrency features)
• Ways of working: Jira and Notion, with a Scrum-like process
• AI features: daily tips, meal summaries, and food search by voice, text, and image
• AI in development: agentic coding as part of the team's everyday workflow
• Scale: up to one million API requests per minute
