The Opportunity

We create exceptional, easy to use, high quality products that lead the commercial real estate industry into the future and delight our customers. To achieve this, our developers work closely with their Product team members to build and improve our industry-leading products. We are looking for someone to build, maintain, and refine our CRE marketing tools, regularly shipping backend (Rails) and frontend (React) features.

How You'll Contribute

Consistently and quickly build and launch excellent software by:

  • Understanding our customers and their needs

  • Engineering elegant and practical solutions

  • Iterating on and polishing your work to meet the standards for Buildout Quality

You'll also:

  • Work within our milestone-based feature development framework, helping your team lead break large projects into well-scoped, estimable components so work starts with a clear plan and multiple engineers can contribute in parallel

  • Work with your team's Product Manager and UX Designer to ensure everyone is on the same page and the user experience is consistently great

  • Help your team maintain Buildout Quality by performing thorough and timely code reviews, pairing on difficult issues to share knowledge and drive accountability, and delivering excellent software on a timely basis to lead by example

  • Set and achieve Buildout-sponsored personal and professional goals with your team lead

What Makes a Great Candidate

  • Multiple years of product software development experience within a SaaS company, or the ability to demonstrate you've learned enough in less time to still be a great engineer and valuable team member

  • You use AI as a force multiplier throughout the software development lifecycle

  • You communicate well across engineering, product, and design, and enjoy solving problems collaboratively.

  • Technical skills:

    • Ruby/Rails: We're a Ruby shop at Buildout, so deep knowledge of Rails will help you get up and running quickly. Our app uses all of the standard Rails goodness you know and love, as well as additional tools for design, business logic, and background jobs. If you like to learn new skills, you're going to fit in really well.

    • JavaScript/React: Our front-end is built on React for all new work, alongside a mature codebase with legacy JavaScript we're actively modernizing. We're looking for people with a strong JavaScript foundation who want to keep finding and working with the best new tools.

    • Testing: Is testing a natural part of your process? If so, you'll be appreciated here. We're investing in our test suite (RSpec and Jest, with growing Playwright end-to-end coverage) and providing ample team resources to make sure that everything we create is tested and rock-solid.

    • Other web tech: We use git for source control, Slim for our view templates, lightly customized Bootstrap for our CSS, MySQL, and AWS. If you're really passionate about some new technology, we'd love to hear about it.

AI-Native Development at Buildout

Engineering at Buildout is AI-accelerated by default. Claude Code is our primary development agent with Claude and Cubic reviewing every PR. We expect AI to be embedded across your implementation, debugging, testing, and documentation work as repeatable workflows, not occasional autocomplete. We look for:

  • Delegation: You know what to hand to an agent, what demands your own hands, and when AI is the wrong tool entirely.

  • Description: You can frame a problem with enough context and constraint that the first output is useful, and you iterate rather than accept.

  • Discernment: You catch subtly wrong code, missing edge cases, and security issues in AI output.

  • Diligence: You own everything you ship. You can delegate the work, but not the accountability.

Our technical interview reflects this: you'll use AI tooling on a realistic problem, and we're watching how you prompt, validate, and push back. Tool logos don't matter; if you've been deep in Cursor or Copilot, you'll pick up Claude Code quickly.

What Success Looks Like

  • 90 days: You're shipping production PRs within your first few weeks, with Claude Code embedded in your daily workflow, and you've delivered your first feature work under our milestone framework.

  • 6 months: You own feature-level work end to end and you're contributing meaningfully to our automated test coverage.

  • 12 months: You're trusted to scope and estimate large projects, and other engineers learn from your AI-assisted workflows and code reviews.
