The Role
The Senior Structural Steel Detailer will take a lead role in delivering high-quality, fabrication-ready drawings and 3D models across commercial and industrial projects in New Zealand.
This role requires strong technical detailing capability, sound understanding of NZ/AU construction and fabrication standards, and the ability to manage detailing outcomes from project interpretation through to final fabrication packages.
As a senior member of the team, this role will help maintain quality standards, support junior detailers, and ensure detailing output contributes to workshop productivity, site constructability, and client satisfaction.
- Take ownership of detailing for assigned projects, from interpreting architectural and structural drawings through to delivering final fabrication packages using Tekla Structures.
- Produce high-quality 3D models and detailed shop drawings for fabricated steelwork, including structural frames, stairs, balustrades, handrails, and custom metalwork.
- Lead coordination with engineers, architects, project stakeholders, and internal teams to ensure detailing aligns with NZ/AU codes, site conditions, fabrication constraints, and project requirements.
- Review and quality-check drawings produced by junior or intermediate team members, providing technical guidance, feedback, and mentoring where required.
- Manage and track RFIs, variations, drawing revisions, and design updates to ensure accuracy, version control, and timely delivery.
- Resolve complex architectural, structural, and fabrication coordination issues using strong technical judgement and practical detailing experience.
- Participate in project coordination meetings remotely and support the interpretation or validation of site information where available through local teams, site photos, digital tools, or 3D scans.
- Coordinate with workshop and erection teams to support production planning, sequencing, constructability, and realistic project deadlines.
- Maintain clear drawing files, model records, project documentation, revision history, and technical notes in line with project and company standards.
- Contribute to internal technical reviews, detailing standards, workflow improvement, and quality outcomes across the detailing function.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with company QHSE policies and procedures.
- Other position-level duties as they arise.
Requirements
- Minimum 5+ yearsโ experience as a Structural Steel Detailer, with a strong track record delivering detailing projects in New Zealand and/or Australia.
- Expert-level proficiency with Tekla Structures and strong understanding of NZ/AU fabrication and erection practices.
- Sound knowledge of NZ/AU construction codes and engineering standards, including AS/NZS 1554.1, AS/NZS 5131, and ISO 9606.
- Proven ability to deliver fabrication-ready shop drawings and 3D models for structural steel, stairs, balustrades, handrails, frames, and custom metalwork.
- Strong ability to interpret architectural, structural, and engineering drawings and resolve complex coordination issues.
- Experience reviewing the work of junior or intermediate detailers, providing feedback, and supporting technical development.
- Strong understanding of workshop requirements, erection sequencing, buildability, fabrication constraints, and site practicality.
- Clear and confident written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to participate in meetings and collaborate with senior stakeholders.
- Demonstrated problem-solving mindset, initiative, and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and deliver to deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Competent with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Reliable, quality-focused, and comfortable taking ownership of detailing outcomes in a remote team environment.
