The Role

The Senior Structural Steel Detailer will take a lead role in delivering high-quality, fabrication-ready drawings and 3D models across commercial and industrial projects in New Zealand.

This role requires strong technical detailing capability, sound understanding of NZ/AU construction and fabrication standards, and the ability to manage detailing outcomes from project interpretation through to final fabrication packages.

As a senior member of the team, this role will help maintain quality standards, support junior detailers, and ensure detailing output contributes to workshop productivity, site constructability, and client satisfaction.

  • Take ownership of detailing for assigned projects, from interpreting architectural and structural drawings through to delivering final fabrication packages using Tekla Structures.
  • Produce high-quality 3D models and detailed shop drawings for fabricated steelwork, including structural frames, stairs, balustrades, handrails, and custom metalwork.
  • Lead coordination with engineers, architects, project stakeholders, and internal teams to ensure detailing aligns with NZ/AU codes, site conditions, fabrication constraints, and project requirements.
  • Review and quality-check drawings produced by junior or intermediate team members, providing technical guidance, feedback, and mentoring where required.
  • Manage and track RFIs, variations, drawing revisions, and design updates to ensure accuracy, version control, and timely delivery.
  • Resolve complex architectural, structural, and fabrication coordination issues using strong technical judgement and practical detailing experience.
  • Participate in project coordination meetings remotely and support the interpretation or validation of site information where available through local teams, site photos, digital tools, or 3D scans.
  • Coordinate with workshop and erection teams to support production planning, sequencing, constructability, and realistic project deadlines.
  • Maintain clear drawing files, model records, project documentation, revision history, and technical notes in line with project and company standards.
  • Contribute to internal technical reviews, detailing standards, workflow improvement, and quality outcomes across the detailing function.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with company QHSE policies and procedures.
  • Other position-level duties as they arise.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5+ yearsโ€™ experience as a Structural Steel Detailer, with a strong track record delivering detailing projects in New Zealand and/or Australia.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Tekla Structures and strong understanding of NZ/AU fabrication and erection practices.
  • Sound knowledge of NZ/AU construction codes and engineering standards, including AS/NZS 1554.1, AS/NZS 5131, and ISO 9606.
  • Proven ability to deliver fabrication-ready shop drawings and 3D models for structural steel, stairs, balustrades, handrails, frames, and custom metalwork.
  • Strong ability to interpret architectural, structural, and engineering drawings and resolve complex coordination issues.
  • Experience reviewing the work of junior or intermediate detailers, providing feedback, and supporting technical development.
  • Strong understanding of workshop requirements, erection sequencing, buildability, fabrication constraints, and site practicality.
  • Clear and confident written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to participate in meetings and collaborate with senior stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving mindset, initiative, and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and deliver to deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Reliable, quality-focused, and comfortable taking ownership of detailing outcomes in a remote team environment.
