The Role
The Travel Management team owns the systems that make Engine work for enterprise customers — travel policies, travel controls, account hierarchy, roles and permissions, and granular policies across lodging, flights, and cars. This is where scale meets configurability, and where the platform earns the trust of the largest companies we serve.
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can design distributed backend systems, make tough calls with incomplete information, and drive scalable, enterprise-grade solutions across a highly cross-functional environment. You'll be a heavy backend contributor, working on greenfield architecture and re-architecting existing components as we unlock the next stage of the platform.
What You'll Do
- Re-architect account hierarchy — migrating from single-user-per-business assumptions to a scalable model that supports complex parent-child business relationships
- Build out dynamic travel policies that scale across lodging, flights, and cars for enterprise customers
- Evaluate what stays in the monolith vs. moves to microservices — and make the call
- Collaborate closely with business stakeholders on negotiations and tough product calls
- Partner with frontend engineers on the team to ship features end-to-end
- Contribute to a future policies service where compiled languages (Go / Rust) are on the table
What We're Looking For
Required:
- Strong backend engineering fundamentals in Node / TypeScript
- Hands-on experience with a compiled language (Go or Rust)
- Solid relational database experience (Postgres, MySQL) and distributed systems knowledge
- AWS and serverless architecture experience (Lambda)
- Conviction with rationale — you make decisions with incomplete information, own them, and move forward
- Highly cross-functional — you'll interface directly with business partners on negotiations and product decisions
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity and negotiating outcomes across engineering and business
- Insist on high standards — for your code, your systems, and your team
Nice to Have:
- Ruby on Rails experience (some of our services are on Rails)
- React or frontend exposure
- Prior experience building multi-tenant enterprise systems, permissions frameworks, or policy engines
