Want to know if you're a match for this job?
Plotly builds the tools millions of developers use to work with data. Our open-source libraries are downloaded millions of times per day, Dash is one of the most popular ways to build data applications in Python, and we are building AI features up and down the stack.
Dash Enterprise is our commercial platform: it lets organizations deploy, scale, secure, and govern those applications inside their own Kubernetes clusters, on-prem or in their private cloud.
The Role
This is a hands-on-keyboard Senior or Staff Engineer position for someone who wants to build. You will own product components and take features from design through implementation and into production. You will work closely with our product and technical leads.
The work is full of hard problems in distributed systems, reliability, and operability — in environments we do not directly control, because the platform runs our customers' own applications inside their own Kubernetes clusters.
You will have real, end-to-end ownership of the components and features you take on, from the design decisions through what runs in production.
Plotly is a heavy adopter of the latest AI coding tools. We encourage engineers to experiment with new tools and processes while upholding the engineering rigor and quality our customers depend on.
Key Responsibilities
Own product components: design, architect, and implement features end-to-end, from design through production.
Integrate with customer infrastructure: build and maintain integrations that let the platform integrate natively with a customer's own services and infrastructure.
Instrument the platform: build observability — tracing, metrics, and logging — and turn the telemetry that comes back from customers' deployments into product improvements.
Build for a self-managed reality: construct software that installs, upgrades, and runs reliably inside customers' own Kubernetes clusters.
Strengthen reliability and availability: make the platform highly available for our largest, most restricted customers.
Collaborate with product and technical leads: partner on what to build and how, with scope that grows with your experience and level.
Mentor and raise the bar: share knowledge and help strengthen engineering practice across the team.
Requirements
We don't expect every candidate to check every box below. If you're strong across most of these, we'd love to hear from you.
Proven production experience: you have designed and managed large production systems and you know first-hand what it takes to build them properly and keep them healthy.
Deep fundamentals and range: you're comfortable taking expertise from one domain and applying it to unfamiliar problems rather than being narrowly specialized.
Platform expertise: experience with Kubernetes, distributed systems, and microservice orchestration.
Hands-on distributed systems debugging: tracing, metrics, performance analysis, and observability.
Networking knowledge: including familiarity with how networking behaves inside Kubernetes.
Security fundamentals: familiarity with resolving vulnerabilities and CVEs and using scanners and tooling to manage them.
Strong application-level engineering: solid system design principles, experience building user-facing production applications for enterprise customers, and fluency in two or three programming languages (we primarily work in Go and TypeScript).
Self-managed / on-prem experience: you have shipped enterprise software that runs in environments you don't operate.
A hands-on builder: you want deep technical impact and to stay hands-on.
Nice-to-Haves
Experience with:
Hosting platforms, PaaS, or internal developer platforms; anywhere you have had to run arbitrary or untrusted user code safely.
Temporal or another durable-workflow engine.
Identity and SSO integration experience.
Container build systems.
Integrating AI/LLMs into production and enterprise systems.
The Python or Dash ecosystems.

Plotly
View Company ProfilePlotly (operating at plotly.com) is a data visualization and analytics platform engineered for scientists, engineers, analysts, and AI-driven teams. Founded in 2013 by Matthew Sundquist, Alex Johnson, and Chris Parmer, and headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Plotly redefines how complex datasets are interpreted by blending interactive, browser-based tools with open-source flexibility. Unlike traditional static visualization tools, Plotly’s solutions—including Plotly.js, Plotly.py, and Dash—enable real-time, dynamic, and AI-ready data exploration. Under the hood, its technology leverages web standards (HTML5, WebGL) to render high-performance, publication-quality charts, graphs, and 3D visualizations with minimal coding overhead. This empowers researchers, developers, and enterprises to derive actionable insights from large-scale datasets, automate reports, and integrate visualizations into custom applications. With over 1.3 billion downloads, Plotly has become the most widely adopted data app for the AI era, serving industries from biotech to finance. Backed by tens of millions in funding and generating $13M in annual revenue, the privately held company continues to expand its ecosystem with tools like NiceGUI, a Python-based UI framework for browser-based applications.
