The role of Senior Director of Product, Coverage at PHIL involves owning the coverage engine end-to-end, including real-time benefit verification, prior authorization, and plan-specific appeals, along with the product foundation that supports it. This is a general manager role with full ownership of outcomes and the freedom to pivot as needed.
You will decide what to build, what to buy, and which partners to connect to, always focusing on one critical question: how many more patients get covered and start therapy, and how quickly. Coverage directly impacts how fast new therapies can be brought on and how well patients are served, making this role central to PHIL’s growth and launch success.
You will report to the Vice President of Product Management and collaborate closely with Business Development, Engineering, Design, and Pharmacy Operations. Your responsibilities will include leading strategy, requirements, and prioritization, while these teams handle partner relationships, technical build, user experience, and operational expertise.
This is initially a hands-on, senior-level individual contributor role without direct reports. As the business and function scale, there may be opportunities to build and lead a team based on evolving business needs.
What you'll own:
Business outcomes: Own the business outcomes of coverage, not just the features. This includes growth and coverage performance, new capabilities, and expansion into new therapeutic areas. You will be responsible for delivery and success, ensuring not only what gets built but also how it works in the real world and whether it achieves the desired results.
Business strategy: Serve as a strategic partner who informs and shapes PHIL’s business strategy. You will push back when necessary, bring solutions rather than just problems, and help the business stay focused.
Coverage strategy and roadmap: Own the end-to-end roadmap for coverage, including benefit verification, prior authorization, and appeals. Align this roadmap with PHIL’s business strategy and measurable patient-start outcomes.
The coverage funnel: Understand every step from prescription to approved therapy start, identify where patients and prescribers drop out, and prioritize the highest-leverage fixes instead of relying on averages.
Prescriber (HCP) experience: Ensure coverage tasks are integrated into the workflows where prescribers already work, specifically through the EHR, minimizing effort and friction. Be rigorous about understanding how prescribers behave today and why they would choose PHIL’s workflow over alternatives.
Integrations and product foundation: Own the roadmap for external integrations (EHRs, payers and plans, third-party providers) and the platform capabilities beneath them. Develop a clear point of view on build vs. buy, with speed and quality as the primary considerations.
Competitive and partner landscape: Maintain an honest view of the competitive landscape and PHIL’s strengths and gaps, with a plan to address them. Manage partnerships to secure the right level of access and execution, and drive a well-executed payer and network adoption plan.
Metrics and operational KPIs: Set long-term success metrics, KPIs, and SLAs for coverage and integrations, and report on them to leadership.
Discovery and prioritization: Lead research and discovery across Product, Engineering, Operations, and Commercial. Understand the incentives of every stakeholder group (prescribers, patients, payers, pharmacies, manufacturers) and prioritize ruthlessly.
Team and standards: Mentor product team members and raise the bar on strategic rigor and operational depth, including benchmarking against industry best practices.
What success looks like in your first year:
By 90 days: Map the coverage funnel and current coverage landscape, meet key partners and internal stakeholders, and identify the biggest leaks and opportunities backed by data. Perform a product-level competitive benchmarking analysis and share an initial assessment with senior leadership.
By 6 months: Deliver a prioritized coverage and integrations roadmap with defined KPIs and agreed build-vs-buy decisions. Ship at least one quick win that measurably improves benefit verification or prior authorization speed or quality.
By 12 months: Have at least one new integration capability live that drives speed or a positive improvement in coverage, hitting its targets including a measurable reduction in HCP effort. Coverage KPIs and SLAs are tracked and reported to leadership, and the roadmap supports at least one new therapeutic category.
What you'll bring:
PHIL seeks exceptional product strategists who can shape how an entire organization thinks and acts. These individuals set direction with the C-suite, defend it under pressure, and engage with engineers in detail. Strategic judgment, bias to action, and the ability to drive results in complex, regulated, high-stakes environments are critical. Deep healthcare experience is helpful but not required.
10+ years in product management, including at least 3 years turning business strategy into clear product requirements and outcomes.
A proven record of defining and driving product strategy in complex, regulated, or mission-critical domains, and owning business outcomes end-to-end like a general manager, with the ability to pivot when the facts change.
Drive strategy for the organization, not just your product area: inform and mold business strategy, push back when needed, and bring solutions.
Strong executive presence: defend your ideas and thought process with senior leaders and the C-suite without getting ruffled, and hold your ground when the evidence supports it.
Structure ambiguous problems well: ask probing questions to understand the data, challenge averages, and break a problem into key opportunity areas by understanding what each stakeholder group needs.
Listen, engage with pushback, and re-plan quickly when assumptions change.
A strong bias to action and a desire to solve problems. Move fast, potentially needing to be asked to slow down occasionally.
Set and managed product KPIs and operational SLAs, and are fluent with data.
Understand technical systems well enough to collaborate effectively with engineering teams.
Use AI regularly in your own work and have applied it in real product solutions or development efficiency. PHIL doesn’t need an AI expert but requires curiosity and a track record of picking up new tools.
Thrive under pressure, work independently, and launch solutions quickly.
Deeply passionate about PHIL’s mission of getting patients their medication, even if your background isn’t in healthcare.
Nice to have:
Healthcare experience, such as pharmacy operations, EHR systems, prior authorization, benefit verification, or payer and plan integrations.
Experience evaluating and onboarding third-party vendors or service providers.
Hands-on experience with prescriber-facing workflows or EHR-embedded tools.
Education in technology, healthcare, or pharmacy.
