We’re on a mission to empower animal healthcare professionals with opportunities to earn more and achieve greater flexibility in their careers and personal lives. Powered by groundbreaking technology, Roo has built the industry-leading veterinary staffing platform, connecting Veterinarians, Technicians, and Assistants with animal hospitals for relief work and hiring opportunities. Roo empowers the largest network of over 20,000 veterinary professionals to help more than 9,000 animal hospitals provide quality care to more pets. Together, we’ve provided more than 3 million hours of healthcare, helping Veterinarians earn more than $200 million.

About the Role

We’re looking for a motivated and skilled Full Stack Engineer (Software Engineer II) to join our growing engineering team. In this mid-level role, you’ll play a critical part in designing, building, and maintaining features that power Roo’s veterinary marketplace. You’ll work cross-functionally with product, design, data, and engineering peers to bring scalable, high-impact solutions to life.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who’s already gained a solid foundation in full-stack development and is ready to take on more responsibility - whether it’s owning features end-to-end, mentoring junior engineers, or driving architectural improvements.

We’re in the builder era. Prompt-to-feature workflows are real, AI coding tools are the new norm, and the teams that win will be the ones who set up the right infrastructure to move fast with them. We’re looking for an engineer who proactively embodies this builder mindset.

This is a remote-first role, with occasional travel to San Francisco for cross-functional events or team offsites as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with product managers, designers, analysts, and engineers to deliver robust and thoughtful technical solutions that solve real business problems.
  • Design, develop, and maintain features across our stack, with a focus on scalable architecture, performance, and maintainability.
  • Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code, contributing to both our React Native mobile app and backend services.
  • Participate in technical design discussions and make meaningful contributions to architectural decisions.
  • Lead by example through high-quality code, peer code reviews, and mentoring early-career engineers.
  • Own the testing lifecycle for your features—writing unit tests with Jest and end-to-end tests with Cypress.
  • Investigate and resolve production issues, improve observability, and contribute to platform reliability.
  • Partner with DevOps and infrastructure teams to ensure smooth deployments, CI/CD workflows, and system performance.
  • Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices, and proactively introduce improvements to tools, processes, or technologies.

Qualifications

  • 2–4 years of professional experience as a Software Engineer, with strong proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Mobile development experience (e.g., React Native or another mobile framework)
  • Experience with Node, Express, React, AWS, and relational databases
  • Proficient at writing complex and efficient SQL queries
  • Experience working with a growing team and early stage startup strongly preferred
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Degree in Computer Science or relevant field preferred

About You

  • Highly self-driven with a passion to solve problems and research solutions
  • Extremely agile & flexible, since we are evolving continually
  • Demonstrates empathy and collaboration within the team, across teams, and across functions
  • Trustworthy with impeccable integrity, authenticity, and high ethical standards
  • Great attention to details
  • Can do positive attitude

While we are a remote first company, if you are based in San Francisco this will be a hybrid role.

Founded in 2019, Roo specializes in connecting veterinarians and veterinary technicians with animal hospitals for flexible relief work and hiring opportunities. Unlike traditional staffing models that rely on rigid schedules and limited networks, Roo transforms the way relief work gets done by leveraging a digital platform that streamlines bookings and matches professionals with hospitals in real time. Under the hood, the platform uses a user-friendly mobile app—available for both iOS and Android—to enable veterinarians, technicians, and hospitals to browse, book, and manage shifts effortlessly. This allows veterinary professionals to access a broader range of opportunities while hospitals gain access to a larger pool of qualified talent, ensuring better coverage and improved animal care. Backed by $11 million in Series A funding, Roo is positioned to expand its reach and further disrupt the veterinary staffing landscape.
