Energy Marshal (HSE) - Civilization-Scale AI Infrastructure

The HSE Team

Key problems the team addresses:

• Own safety on gigawatts of high-energy infrastructure. Headcount and sites are scaling faster than institutional knowledge, creating gaps between paper controls and field application—where fatalities occur.

• Keep a 24/7 workforce running without injuries. Fatigue, shift work, and high-energy exposure compound into injuries or claims if not tracked proactively.

• Ensure environmental compliance ahead of industry speed. Behind-the-meter generation spans multiple states with varying permits, runtime limits, and deadlines—manual compliance can’t keep up.

Role Scope

• Own hazardous energy control across multiple concurrent gigawatt-scale data center builds, from temporary power through construction, Level 1–5 commissioning, and handoff to operations.

• Write, review, and approve switching plans, LOTO procedures, energization sequences, and zero-energy verifications before medium-voltage or low-voltage gear is landed, tested, or turned on.

• Lead pre-energization and energization kick-off meetings, with sole authority to authorize, pause, or stop energization/isolation across contractors, commissioning agents, utilities, and operations.

• Audit the electrical safety program in the field, including JHAs, energized work permits, boundary controls, PPE, arc flash labeling, and gaps between written controls and field practices.

• Manage the Kirk key program: log and control every key for switchgear, transformers, and generators from delivery to handoff to operations.

• Oversee the tamper seal program on energized/isolated equipment, with sole authority to authorize seal breaks.

• Direct contract site-level Energy Marshals: select, onboard, audit, and replace those who don’t meet standards.

• Build a multi-site Energy Marshal standard, including templates, energization trackers, and training, to deploy programs in days rather than months.

What We're Looking For

The below is a starting point—exceptional candidates who don’t fit perfectly are encouraged to apply.

• Minimum 5 years as an Energy Marshal or Controlling Energy Marshal in data center or mission-critical construction, with end-to-end energization experience across multiple sites simultaneously.

• Current NFPA 70E qualified-person training, a recognized electrical safety credential (NFPA CESCP or CESW), OSHA 30 Construction, and current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications.

• Proven experience writing and approving switching orders and LOTO procedures for MV (above 1000V) and LV distribution, including utility service, switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS, PDUs, and busway.

• History of stopping energizations when field conditions didn’t match paperwork, with clear documentation of how work was safely restarted.

• Experience directing Energy Marshals across multiple sites, enforcing a single standard, and replacing underperforming leads.

• Coordination of GC, electrical subcontractors, commissioning agents, utilities, and owner operations on live campuses where construction and energized systems share walls.

• Management of a Kirk key interlock or tamper seal program on live gear, with full accountability for keys/seals from delivery to turnover.

• Maintenance of energization logs, permit records, and isolation registers to ensure auditors or investigations can reconstruct any switching event.

• Ability to explain arc flash boundaries, incident energy, and approach distances clearly to both apprentices and executives.

• Bonus: Electrician licensure (journeyman or master), utility safety leadership (CUSP), commissioning credentials (CxA, QCxP), arc flash/coordination studies (SKM, ETAP), or experience with behind-the-meter generation and multi-state utility interconnections.
