About the Role

As a Bilingual Legal Assistant in the Humanitarian Department, you will support attorneys and the Senior Legal Assistant across VAWA petitions, T visas, U visas, and humanitarian-based Adjustment of Status matters. You will own key parts of the case process, from gathering client documentation and conducting research to preparing filings and monitoring deadlines. Your work will directly affect the quality, completeness, and timely progression of cases involving people navigating highly sensitive circumstances. This position is being added to strengthen the department's capacity and client support.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare accurate, complete, and well-organized case files for VAWA petitions, T visas, U visas, and humanitarian-based Adjustment of Status matters.
  • Draft and review affidavits, declarations, correspondence, and supporting legal documents under attorney supervision.
  • Conduct legal research that helps attorneys evaluate case options, develop strategies, and address case-specific issues.
  • Manage an assigned caseload, track milestones, and ensure filing requirements and deadlines are met.
  • Coordinate with clients in English and Spanish to gather records, clarify information, and resolve missing documentation.
  • Keep clients informed about case progress, upcoming steps, appointments, and preparation requirements.
  • Maintain accurate case notes, documents, deadlines, and status updates in the case management system.
  • Prepare clients for consultations, hearings, court appearances, and other legal proceedings with empathy and clear guidance.
  • Protect confidential and sensitive information while complying with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, the Senior Legal Assistant, and other team members to resolve case challenges and balance departmental priorities.

Requirements

Must-Have:

  • At least 2 years of legal assistant experience, including direct work on humanitarian immigration matters such as VAWA petitions, U visas, T visas, or humanitarian-based Adjustment of Status.
  • Professional written and verbal fluency in both English and Spanish.
  • Experience drafting affidavits, declarations, and other legal documents and preparing case files for submission.
  • Ability to independently manage a caseload, maintain accurate records, and meet multiple legal deadlines.
  • Experience using legal research tools and case management software.

Nice to Have:

  • Paralegal certification or legal assistant diploma or bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience preparing clients for hearings, interviews, court appearances, or other legal proceedings.
  • Experience supporting departmental reporting, workload coordination, or case workflow improvements.
  • Previous experience working with a distributed or fully remote legal team.
