The Associate General Counsel will partner with an existing team of two (General Counsel and Paralegal) to provide legal support to a fast-growing company. This hire will play a critical role in the overall growth of the company by evolving a legal ecosystem that addresses both the current and future growth stages, mitigates risk, and enables the business to scale sustainably. While expected to cover a wide range of legal and regulatory areas, the Associate General Counsel will primarily support the People/HR and Product/AI teams, as well as guide the company’s Privacy program.

Core Responsibilities & Expectations for the Role

  • People/HR legal support: Provide comprehensive legal counsel on all People Team operations, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, terminations, leaves of absence, employee relations, compensation, benefits, and workplace policies, ensuring compliance with employment law throughout the employee lifecycle across both corporate and professional entity structures
  • Product Team legal support: Provide legal support to a developing Product Team looking to drive innovation through use of technology and AI; familiarity with evolving legal and regulatory landscape related to AI usage, particularly in the healthcare setting
  • Privacy law compliance: Advise on and ensure compliance with privacy-related laws and regulations, including HIPAA and the CPRA, covering areas such as data collection, use, storage, and sharing, breach response protocols, and consumer data rights
  • Legal risk management: Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks across the organization's operations, contracts, and strategic initiatives; establish and refine legal frameworks, policies, and processes that support Habitat Health’s rapid growth, ensuring adaptability in an evolving healthcare landscape
  • Regulatory compliance: Ensure company practices align with applicable laws, industry regulations, and internal policies; monitor changes in relevant legislation, particularly with respect to healthcare-specific laws and regulations including but not limited to: value-based care arrangements, provider risk-sharing agreements, managed care regulations, licensing and credentialing, patient privacy and confidentiality, PACE programs, and billing and reimbursement
  • Contract Review & Negotiation: Draft, review, and negotiate a wide array of commercial contracts—including those with clinicians, facilities, healthcare providers, and strategic partners—in collaboration with cross-functional business units
  • Manage Outside Counsel: Coordinate relationships with outside law firms as necessary to assist the legal function and support business activities
  • Cross-functional advising: Serve as a legal advisor to executives and business units on day-to-day operational and strategic decisions
  • General Counsel support: Step in during General Counsel’s absence and handling escalated or specialized legal matters

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the relevant state bar association, ideally California.
  • Meaningful legal leadership experience with increasing responsibility, ideally a mix of in-house and law firm experience.
  • Meaningful experience supporting HR, Product, and Privacy teams, including understanding of applicable regulations and laws that impact operations and processes of these teams.
  • Deep understanding of healthcare regulatory frameworks, including California-specific laws, and experience engaging with regulatory bodies such as CMS, DHCS, OIG, or other state and federal agencies.

Essential Functions & Physical Requirements

  • Communicate effectively with participants, caregivers, team members, and other stakeholders in person, by phone, and through electronic systems.
  • Remain stationary and/or move about for extended periods, consistent with job duties.
  • Travel between work sites or community locations as needed.
