Public Library of Science
View Company ProfilePublic Library of Science (operating at plos.org) is a nonprofit open-access publishing platform engineered for democratizing scientific research. Founded in 2000 by Harold E. Varmus and headquartered in San Francisco, California, PLOS disrupts traditional publishing models by eliminating paywalls, ensuring global access to peer-reviewed research. Under the hood, the platform leverages open-content licenses and digital infrastructure to host journals spanning life sciences, medicine, and technology, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. This allows researchers, institutions, and policymakers to freely access, cite, and build upon verified findings without financial barriers. While PLOS operates independently as a nonprofit, its sustainability has faced challenges amid shifting research funding dynamics and evolving academic priorities.
