GrowthX AI is revolutionizing how companies grow with AI by creating a unified system that connects content, opportunities, and results. Their platform is used by companies like Ramp, Lovable, Strapi, and Together AI.
They are hiring their first Assistant Controller to build and own the Accounting function from the ground up. This is a 0-to-1 role, meaning you will establish the entire accounting infrastructure, starting with an outsourced bookkeeping firm and transitioning to an in-house system that scales with the business.
You will report to the Head of Finance and be responsible for the integrity of the books end-to-end, including closing, reporting, accounts receivable (AR)/collections, accounts payable (AP) oversight, revenue recognition, systems, and controls.
Currently, GrowthX relies on an outsourced accounting firm for bookkeeping, but this is a temporary measure. Part of your role will involve bringing this work in-house and reducing dependency on external help as the function matures.
You will need to be hands-on with the actual work, not just reviewing someone else’s output. Your responsibilities will include building processes, controls, and documentation so that future hires can easily understand and follow them.
GrowthX operates on a hybrid model of subscription platform revenue and services revenue, so you will need to handle complex revenue recognition scenarios that are not straightforward SaaS models. You will also face real challenges from day one, such as aging AR, complex contract structures, multi-state tax exposure, and poorly integrated systems.
You might be a fit if you:
- Have prior experience as a Controller or as a strong Assistant Controller/Accounting Manager ready to run the function independently, ideally at a high-growth Series A SaaS company.
- Have built or significantly matured an accounting function before, understanding the requirements for 0 to 1 development, including processes, controls, and documentation.
- Are deeply knowledgeable in U.S. GAAP, particularly ASC 606 revenue recognition for subscription and services revenue, and can handle non-standard revenue scenarios.
- Are AI-forward, using AI tools daily to expedite tasks like closing, reconciliations, and reporting, and have a clear perspective on where automation fits in accounting workflows.
- Are comfortable owning the close process independently, capable of running it without oversight.
- Think like a business partner, not just an accountant, understanding the accounting and cash implications of customer contracts, compensation changes, and operational decisions.
- Communicate clearly and directly, able to explain accounting judgments to non-finance executives and defend them if challenged.
- Are self-directed and comfortable with ambiguity, thriving in a remote, asynchronous, and high-autonomy environment.
What you'll do:
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, currently directing an outsourced accounting firm’s relationship while working to bring close, bookkeeping, and AP execution in-house.
- Prepare and ensure GAAP-compliant financial statements, analyzing balance sheet and P&L movements and investigating variances before they reach leadership.
- Oversee AR and collections, including invoicing, payment application, aging, and direct customer follow-up to address past-due AR.
- Oversee AP and vendor management, including approval workflows and vendor account hygiene.
- Handle complex accounting topics, including ASC 606 revenue recognition, contract modifications, and billing structures in a mixed subscription and services revenue model.
- Manage core finance systems such as Campfire (GL/AR/AP), Carta (equity), and the billing/payment stack, including integration roadmaps.
- Develop accounting processes, approval workflows, documentation, and internal controls for a growing SaaS company.
- Review customer and vendor contracts for accounting, billing, and revenue recognition implications, translating negotiated terms into correct treatments.
- Administer equity, including option grants, cap table accuracy, and coordination with legal and cap table systems.
- Support treasury functions, such as cash positioning, inter-account transfers, and forecasting cash needs.
- Coordinate tax and compliance with external advisors, including multi-state filings and notices.
- Partner with People Ops on payroll accounting, compensation changes, and compliance.
- Prepare monthly reporting packages for lenders and investors.
- Build audit-readiness by creating documentation and controls that hold up under scrutiny.
Bonus points if:
- You have experience with Campfire or similar modern GL systems (e.g., Ramp, Rippling, NetSuite).
- You have built an accounting function at a startup from scratch.
- You have worked in a hybrid subscription and services revenue model.
- You have insourced an accounting function previously outsourced or transitioned a company off an outside bookkeeping firm.
- You have been through a first audit or first institutional financing round.
