India tech hiring has split in two. A new report on 18,752 live postings shows a market that is hiring aggressively for senior talent, doubling down on data engineering, and still barely offering remote work. If you are a remote job seeker, that combination changes how you should play it.
The numbers come from PrepNPlaced's September 2026 report on tech hiring in India, based on 18,752 live postings collected from LinkedIn and Naukri company feeds between September 26 and October 26, 2026. This is India data, not global data — and that distinction matters, because the remote story here is very different from the global remote market.
The headline numbers: 12 seniors for every 1 fresher
Just 799 of the 18,752 postings — 4.3% — were tagged entry or junior level. Senior roles accounted for 9,656 postings (51.5%), and lead-level roles for a further 572. For every entry-level opening, there were twelve senior ones, up from eight in the report's July edition. Hiring has not stopped. It has shifted toward experienced candidates.
| Level | Postings | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Entry / junior | 799 | 4.3% |
| Senior | 9,656 | 51.5% |
| Lead | 572 | — |
| Remote (all levels) | 147 | 0.8% |
Two trends moved at once: the senior-to-entry ratio widened from 8:1 in July to 12:1 in October, and the remote share crept up from 0.4% to 0.8%. Both directions matter. The first tells freshers the competition got harder. The second tells remote seekers the door is opening, but only slightly.
Data engineering is the story
Data engineering's share of postings nearly doubled, from 4.3% in July to 7.7% in October — 1,449 postings. Software engineering is still the largest category at 20.3%, but data engineering is the fastest-moving one. Here is the full role ranking from the report:
| Role | Postings | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer | 3,805 | 20.3% |
| Data Analyst | 2,534 | 13.5% |
| DevOps | 1,685 | 9.0% |
| Data Engineer | 1,449 | 7.7% |
| QA | 1,263 | 6.7% |
| Program Manager | 1,056 | 5.6% |
| Full Stack | 934 | 5.0% |
| Data Scientist | 834 | 4.4% |
Why does this matter for remote seekers? Because data engineering is one of the most remote-friendly disciplines in tech. Pipelines, warehouses, and AI data infrastructure are built by distributed teams by default. A surge in data-engineer demand is a surge in the kind of work remote teams actually hire for.
The skills employers actually screen for
Across all 18,752 postings, Python is the most asked-for skill (28.2%), followed by SQL (21.6%). In cloud, Azure leads at 19.2%, ahead of AWS at 17.1% and GCP at 8.5% — a reminder that the Indian enterprise market leans Microsoft in a way the global market does not.
Inside the 1,449 data-engineer postings, the must-have pair is SQL (45.2%) and Python (42.7%). Then the cloud split repeats: Azure 32.2%, AWS 30.1%, GCP 14.6%. The modern stack follows: Databricks 19.3%, Spark 16.1%, Snowflake 16.1%, Kafka 9.8%, Airflow 7.6%, and dbt 5.0%. The report itself adds an important qualifier: the modern-stack tools are differentiators, not entry requirements. Get the SQL-plus-Python core right first, then add one of them.
The remote reality check: 0.8%
Here is the number that reframes everything else. Just 147 of the 18,752 India tech postings were remote — 0.8%, up from 0.4% in July. Bengaluru alone accounts for about 7,107 postings, more than Hyderabad, Pune, and Mumbai combined, and the top hirers are Wipro (1,258 postings), Larsen & Toubro, and NTT DATA. In other words, the Indian tech hiring machine is still overwhelmingly office-based, concentrated in one city, and led by large services firms.
That is exactly why a global remote board changes the picture. The same data-engineer skills that compete for a thin slice of India's on-site market are hired remotely by companies everywhere else. As of October 28, 2026, HireSkys lists 142 active data-engineer roles — and all of them are remote. The board overall carries 17,162 active approved listings, effectively all remote. The India report describes one country's hiring; the remote market is a different, much larger pool.
What remote seekers should actually do about it
Five moves, in order:
- Build the core pair first. SQL and Python are the two skills that appear in nearly half of all data-engineer postings. If you can write clean, tested SQL and production Python, you clear the first screen for most roles.
- Add exactly one differentiator. Pick one modern-stack tool — dbt, Snowflake, Airflow, or Spark — and build one real project with it. The report says these tools differentiate; one strong project beats four shallow mentions on a resume.
- Apply senior-adjacent, with proof. With 12 senior openings for every entry one, waiting for a junior label is a slow strategy. Apply to senior roles when you can show equivalent work: a pipeline you built, a dataset you cleaned at scale, an AI data system you shipped.
- Search globally, not just locally. If your market offers 0.8% remote, your search radius is the problem, not your skills. Remote-first companies hire data engineers from anywhere — that is the pool to compete in.
- Track the trend, not the headline. Data engineering doubled its share in one quarter. Check the same numbers next quarter before committing to a six-month learning plan — markets that move this fast reward people who re-check.

These are live on HireSkys as of October 28, 2026. Listings change daily, so if one is filled, search the same title again — new ones appear constantly.
- Senior Data Engineer – AI/ML — Remote (India), OpenTable. The posting asks for Databricks, Spark, Snowflake, and Airflow — almost exactly the report's differentiator stack.
- Senior Data Engineer (Snowflake, dbt, Python) – Freelance — Remote (Poland), Netguru.
- Data Engineer — Remote (United States), Kunai.
- Lead Data Engineer — Remote (Poland), Trinetix.
- Data Engineer — Remote (Mexico), Enroute.
- Data Engineer — Remote (Colombia), Sonatype.
Freshers: the honest version
A 4.3% entry-level share is brutal, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. But it is not zero, and the fresher playbook is different from the senior one: pick one role family, build two or three public proof-of-work projects, and target companies that hire on skills rather than years. We wrote a full step-by-step plan for exactly that situation in our Remote Jobs With No Experience: The Complete Beginner's Guide (2026) — 12 beginner-friendly roles, real entry-level listings, and a five-step application plan.
