What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

A forward deployed engineer is a software engineer who works inside the customer's environment instead of on the vendor's core product. The model was pioneered by Palantir, which discovered that its data platform only created value when its own engineers sat with customers, understood their operations, and built the final solution on site. The FDE is that engineer: part builder, part consultant, part product scout.

Why is every AI company hiring them now? Because AI products fail in the demo-to-production gap. A model that dazzles in a sales call still needs data pipelines, integrations with the customer's systems (EHRs, CRMs, data warehouses), security reviews and workflow redesign before it runs a real business process. Companies learned that shipping an engineer with the product closes that gap weeks or months faster — so AI labs, AI platforms and vertical AI startups have adopted the Palantir playbook wholesale. Interest in the role has surged over the past year, and hiring has followed.

The one-line test: if the job description says you will own a customer's deployment outcome end to end — discovery, build, launch, iteration — it is a real FDE role, whatever the exact title.

What FDEs Actually Do, From Real Job Descriptions

We read the live FDE job descriptions currently on HireSkys. Stripped of buzzwords, the job repeats the same five motions everywhere:

  • You embed with the customer. Tines hires FDEs "embedded directly with our most strategic enterprise customers." Juniper Square puts it bluntly: "You are in the room with the client, not behind a ticket queue."
  • You own deployments end to end. Discovery, scoping, architecture, build, go-live, iteration. Hippocratic AI expects an FDE to own a complete AI deployment — RAG pipeline, integrations, production launch, monitoring — within the first 90 days.
  • You build production systems, not slideware. Real integrations: APIs, webhooks, EHRs, data warehouses, MCP/tool-calling layers, migration tooling (Kong, Datafold). This is engineering work with deadlines measured in customer outcomes.
  • You are the customer's trusted technical face. Training end users in the morning, presenting a business case to a CTO in the afternoon (Tines lists both). Communication is a core skill, not a soft extra.
  • You carry the field back into the product. Nearly every description — Second Front, TalentPluto, Juniper Square — makes the FDE a direct input into the product roadmap, because they see where the product breaks in the real world first.

There are also distinct flavours: AI deployment FDEs (Hippocratic AI, Juniper Square — agents and RAG in production), platform/infrastructure FDEs (Kong, Render, Runpod, Datafold — implementations, migrations, integrations), and defense FDEs (Second Front Systems — deployments into defense and intelligence environments, sometimes classified facilities, where security eligibility matters).

Forward Deployed Engineer Salary (Real Listing Data)

Most salary pages guess. Here are the actual numbers from the live market: of the 47 US FDE listings on HireSkys today, 16 publish a salary range. Across those 16, advertised pay spans $100,000 to $280,000, and the middle of the market — the median of the range midpoints — sits at about $180,000.

Mid-Level FDE

Live ranges cluster around $100K–$220K. Runpod lists $100–160K; Juniper Square's mid-level Applied AI role lists $130–160K; TalentPluto lists $150–220K plus equity.

Senior FDE

Typically $160K–$280K. Second Front and Juniper Square list $160–200K; SecurityScorecard $180–240K; Tines tops the board at $230–280K OTE.

Read the Fine Print

Some figures are OTE (base + variable), some base only, startups add equity, and several companies (Webflow, Veeam) pay by location zone. Compare total comp, not headlines.

Why so high for a "customer-facing" role? Because the FDE sits on the revenue line: a failed enterprise deployment is a lost contract, and a successful one expands. Companies are paying senior-engineer money for engineers who can both write the code and carry the room.

Skills Employers Ask For

Across the current listings, the screening pattern is consistent:

  • Real software engineering. Full-stack development, APIs and integrations, debugging across a customer's stack end to end. Most roles ask for several years of building production software.
  • AI deployment literacy (for AI roles). LLM applications, RAG pipelines, tool-calling/agent integrations, evaluation and monitoring. Hippocratic AI's description reads like an AI engineering checklist because the deployment IS AI engineering.
  • Data and platform fluency. Warehouses (Snowflake, Databricks), pipelines, cloud infrastructure — the systems FDEs integrate with daily.
  • Customer presence. Running discovery with non-technical stakeholders, translating business pain into a technical plan, training users, handling a CTO's hard questions.
  • Autonomy in ambiguity. "Thrive in ambiguity" (Tines), "operate independently" (Juniper Square), founding-team roles (Render's first FDE, Tines' founding FDE team, Docebo's founding member) — there is often no playbook yet; you write it.
  • Domain eligibility where it matters. Defense roles may involve classified environments; healthcare roles touch regulated data. Background and compliance requirements appear in the fine print — read it before applying.

FDE vs Solutions Engineer vs Software Engineer

Forward Deployed Engineer

Builds custom solutions on the product, inside one customer's environment. Owns the deployment outcome after the sale. Success = the customer runs it in production.

Solutions Engineer

Mostly pre-sales: demos, proofs of concept, technical validation during the deal. Hands over at signature; rarely owns the long production tail.

Software Engineer (Product)

Builds the core product for all customers from inside the vendor. Deepest technical focus, least customer contact.

Titles blur in practice — some "solutions" roles are really FDE roles and vice versa. Judge by the description: whoever owns the deployment after the contract is signed is doing FDE work.

How to Get Hired as an FDE

  • Step 1 — Prove you ship, not just code. FDE interviews hunt for end-to-end ownership stories: a system you designed, deployed and kept alive in front of real users. Side projects with actual users beat algorithm trivia here.
  • Step 2 — Get fluent in the AI deployment stack. Build one real thing: a RAG pipeline over real documents, an agent with tool-calling, an integration between two production systems. The current descriptions name these patterns explicitly.
  • Step 3 — Show customer range. Consulting, solutions, support engineering, founding-engineer and technical customer-success experience all translate. Prepare stories about ambiguous problems, unhappy stakeholders and trade-offs you owned.
  • Step 4 — Pick your flavour. AI deployment, platform/infrastructure, data, or defense — the listings above split cleanly into these, and each screens differently. Apply where your background already rhymes.
  • Step 5 — Expect a hybrid interview loop. Typically: a coding/technical deep-dive, a system-design or deployment-scenario exercise, and a customer-simulation conversation. Companies are testing whether they can put you in front of their biggest customer alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a forward deployed engineer a real coding job?

Yes. FDEs write production code — integrations, data pipelines, AI agents, migration tooling — inside customer environments. The difference from a product engineering role is where the code runs and who it serves: one customer's deployment, owned end to end, instead of the vendor's core product.

What is the average forward deployed engineer salary?

Based on the 16 US listings on HireSkys that publish ranges today (checked October 22, 2026), FDE pay spans $100,000–$280,000 with the middle of the market around $180,000. Senior roles typically list $160K–$280K (Tines tops the current board at $230–280K OTE); mid-level roles cluster around $100K–$220K, sometimes plus equity. Some employers pay by location zone.

Do forward deployed engineers travel?

It varies by company. The current listings are remote-first US roles, but the work is customer-facing: expect periodic on-site time at customer offices for kickoffs, launches and escalations — and in defense roles, work inside secure facilities. Ask about the travel expectation in the first interview; good employers state it plainly.

How is an FDE different from a solutions engineer?

Solutions engineers mostly work pre-sales — demos and proofs of concept that help win the deal. Forward deployed engineers own what happens after the deal: building, deploying and operating the solution in the customer's production environment. If the role owns the deployment outcome, it is FDE work regardless of the title on the posting.

Do I need AI experience to become an FDE?

For AI-company roles, increasingly yes — those deployments are AI systems, so RAG, agents and LLM integration experience is screened for. But platform, infrastructure and data FDE roles (Kong, Render, Datafold in the listings above) hire strong generalist engineers with integration and migration experience. Match the flavour of role to the background you already have.

Which companies are hiring forward deployed engineers now?

On HireSkys today: Tines, Kong, Render, SecurityScorecard, Juniper Square, Hippocratic AI, Webflow, Veeam, LiveKit, Datafold, Second Front Systems and dozens more — 68 active FDE-titled listings in total, 47 of them US remote. The full set is linked at the top of this page.
