About tem

We are rebuilding the energy transaction, making it transparent and fair. Our goal is to put power back where it belongs—in the hands of customers—and tackle one of the most critical problems of our century: access to low-cost electricity.

tem exists to fix a broken global energy market that has long favored legacy operators, intermediaries, and opaque pricing. Today’s electricity system was not designed for rapid decarbonization, AI-driven efficiency, or fair access for actual users—businesses and generators.

We’ve built the first AI-native transaction infrastructure to reinvent how electricity is bought, sold, and priced. Our technology cuts out inefficient fees, automates complex market flows, and brings transparency and fairness to energy transactions at scale.

In late 2025, after extraordinary growth, we closed a $75 million Series B led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Albion, Atomico, Allianz, Hitachi Ventures, Schroders Capital, and others—positioning us for global expansion, deeper product innovation, and category leadership.

We’re scaling internationally and building toward a future where AI-driven infrastructure is foundational to electricity markets worldwide.

Since launch, our modern utility product, known as RED, has already facilitated thousands of business customers and billions in energy transaction value, proving that modern software and AI can transform an industry built on legacy systems.

At tem, we’re not just building another energy company—we’re rearchitecting market infrastructure so that transparency, efficiency, and sustainability become the default, not the exception.

The Role

We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Pricing. You'll build and manage the Pricing API behind RED, tem's modern utility product—ensuring its performance, reliability, and correctness. The systems you build price real energy contracts for businesses buying electricity and renewable generators selling it, so correctness translates to money and speed translates to trust.

This is a senior role in our Pricing squad. The focus is backend and data-heavy, with a quant-like flavor, and correctness is critical. You'll shape how our new Pricing API is built, untangle pricing from the systems around it, and ensure that when we can't price something, we can always explain why.

In your first 12 months, you might:

  • See our new Pricing API built from first design through to being ready for third-party access.
  • Lead the move of pricing logic into one service with a clean boundary, deciding when it is proven stable enough to cut over.
  • Design the detection, alerting, and explainability that catch bad or slow prices before they ever reach a customer.
  • Help make pricing measurably faster for every customer quote.
  • Raise the engineering bar across the squad through design reviews, standards, and agent-driven workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Build and iterate on the Pricing API to ensure it is fast, correct, and ready to be opened up to third parties.
  • Support in untangling and extracting pricing logic into its own service as a program, agreeing on clean boundaries with neighboring teams.
  • Own reliability by designing systems that detect pricing errors, stop bad quotes from going out, and explain every price we can't provide.
  • Raise the bar by lifting the standard of everyone working on pricing through design reviews, engineering standards, pairing, and multi-agent workflows.
  • Close the loop by being the go-to engineer for live pricing incidents and turning lessons learned into structural fixes on the roadmap.

Requirements

Must-Haves:

  • Deep production backend Python experience—you have designed and owned APIs at scale and are the person others escalate to when they encounter issues.
  • Experience leading a significant decoupling or migration of a live system without breaking dependencies.
  • Strong FastAPI and SQL skills, with experience in data and analytics-heavy systems where numerical correctness impacts financial outcomes.
  • Ability to set technical direction across teams you don’t manage and negotiate service boundaries with neighboring teams.
  • Agent-native mindset: you don’t just use AI tools like Claude daily; you design multi-agent workflows that enhance team throughput.
  • Product engineering judgment: you understand who reads a price and why, and you deliberately trade off speed, accuracy, and explainability.

Desirable:

  • Domain knowledge from energy pricing, fintech, or neo-utilities.
  • Experience building APIs consumed by external third parties.
  • Knowledge of AWS and serverless patterns, including Lambda, event-driven services, and Postgres on RDS.
  • Experience with Polars or a track record of optimizing numerical code for performance.

Benefits & Perks

  • Competitive salary—our current band for this role is [salary band] or equivalent in local currency.
  • Stock options so everyone has ownership in our mission.
  • 25 days of holiday plus public holidays, with flexibility to swap public holidays for those that matter most to you, including your birthday off.
  • Remote-first and flexible working, with clear core hours and no internal meetings on Friday afternoons.
  • Up to GBP1,200 or EUR1,400 per year for your remote setup.
  • Up to GBP150 or EUR170 per month for wellbeing.

Interview Process

  • Intro call with Talent Partner, Jack (30 minutes).
  • Behavioral interview (60 minutes).
  • Technical interview with team members, including a practical exercise (75 minutes).
  • Bar Raiser interview with leadership stakeholders (45 minutes).
