About the Role

Growth Engineering is the team responsible for building and maintaining the reliable, configurable systems that power scalable client launches and secure member access to Modern Health, one that gives customers programmatic and self-service control over eligibility, identity, and feature packaging while ensuring members can quickly and reliably reach the care they're entitled to. This includes owning the engineering behind eligibility processing, identity and access, the client configuration platform, and support of our reporting platform. Collectively, this is the engineering core of how Modern Health onboards, authenticates, and scales technical access for every client and member globally.

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer who can operate with high ownership across the full stack: someone we can trust to work cross-functionally with product and design, translate ambiguous problems into clear technical plans (tech specs/RFCs), and then execute against that plan, both individually and in close collaboration with other engineers. You'll be expected to have (or quickly build) deep familiarity with our tech stack and product domain so you can move fast without First-derivative learning curves slowing down the team. We expect an engineer at this level to be ramped up and owning critical parts of roadmap development within 30 days of onboarding.

This position is not eligible to be performed in Hawaii.

What You'll Do:

  • Truly full stack product development with a slight lean towards the backend
  • Build and maintain GraphQL APIs powered by Python services (Django, Flask)
  • Implement web and mobile user experiences using React & React Native
  • Engineer efficient and reusable systems that drive complex web and mobile applications
  • Maintain HIPAA and GDPR compliance and general security through best practice implementation
  • Independently write and execute technical plans (tech specs/RFCs) for large, ambiguous, cross-domain projects, negotiating scope with product along the way
  • Lead ambiguous or large projects, working collaboratively with design, product, cross-functional partners, and other engineers to deliver a cohesive adaptive care experience
  • Serve as the directly responsible individual from engineering on roadmap commitments, owning launch timelines, decomposing work, and coordinating dependencies across teams
  • Write and maintain technical documentation, unit tests, and integration tests
  • Be a thought leader in strategic engineering and tech initiatives, and contribute to cross-team engineering forums
  • Lead and contribute to cross-team engineering forums and on cross-team engineering projects
  • Mentor other engineers to scale your impact both on Care Journey and across the engineering department
  • Provide compassionate and impactful reviews of technical project plans and code
  • Participate in on-call, driving investigation, remediation, and process improvements from recurring issues
  • Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position. Applicants must be able to maintain work authorization for the duration of employment without employer sponsorship or employer-provided training plans or attestations (including, for example, the Form I-983 required for STEM OPT).

Our Stack:

  • Python, Django, Flask, FASTApi, aiohttp
  • GraphQL, REST
  • React, React Native, Typescript, Redux, Vite
  • PostgreSQL, Redis
  • Docker
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) including ECS, RDS, Cloudfront, etc.

Who You Are / Requirements:

  • 8+ years of relevant software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages
  • At least 2+ years of production experience in full-stack web development, including Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React Native, and React
  • Deep familiarity with our tech stack (or a directly comparable one) strongly preferred; expect to start meaningfully contributing within your first 30 days
  • Demonstrated high ownership: you independently decompose very ambiguous problems into component parts, propose technically elegant strategies, and can estimate and deliver against them with confidence
  • A track record of writing technical plans (tech specs/RFCs) that hold up under cross-functional scrutiny, and driving solutioning for initiatives that span multiple domains or teams
  • Experience building and maintaining GraphQL and/or REST APIs
  • Experience scaling relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and writing performant queries
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally and be trusted as a technical partner by product, design, and other engineering teams, including navigating disagreement and bringing people along on a technical direction
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable driving alignment with stakeholders outside your immediate team
  • Experience mentoring and effectively working with a distributed development team
  • Experience leading and architecting large-scale projects as a technical thought leader
  • Passion for building something to improve the lives of others.
  • Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position. Applicants must be able to maintain work authorization for the duration of employment without employer sponsorship or employer-provided training plans or attestations (including, for example, the Form I-983 required for STEM OPT).

Bonus points if you have experience in:

  • Authorization protocols such as SSO SAML, OIDC, JWT.
  • AI/LLM-powered product features (e.g., recommendation systems, conversational or agentic experiences)
  • Experience with maturely leveraging AI in your development lifecycle to improve quality and speed for yourself and other engineers
  • Experience with SQL, bash, or other scripting languages to facilitate debugging or developer-experience contributions
  • Working with AWS or other cloud platforms
  • Working at a high-growth startup
  • Working in Health Tech or HR.

Modern Health is a premier, enterprise-grade mental health and wellness powerhouse engineered to orchestrate massive-scale employee-support ecosystems and intelligent, frictionless care-delivery workflows. Operating as a global "mental health benefits" hub, the company eliminates the operational friction of traditional, legacy Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)—which frequently suffer from low engagement, clinical-support silos, and disconnected professional-growth pipelines—by seamlessly deploying advanced "Adaptive Care" telemetry, rigorous evidence-based assessment architectures, and cohesive cross-modality integration frameworks. Moving beyond rigid legacy wellness paradigms, Modern Health empowers global enterprises—including leaders like Pixar, SoFi, and Okta—to dynamically synchronize their 1:1 coaching, clinical therapy, and self-guided digital-resource pipelines with elite, scalable, and audit-ready execution. Under the hood, their sophisticated proprietary operational infrastructure—bolstered by a network spanning 100+ countries and deep domain-expertise in clinical-outcomes research—natively manages complex global multi-region data ingestion, instantaneous automated care-routing, and compliance-hardened wellness-reporting workflows, providing the necessary operational foundation to support the modern, high-velocity human-capital economy. What sets Modern Health apart is its uncompromising dedication to frictionless "mental-wellbeing-orchestration"; by bridging the gap between highly technical, performance-intensive clinical demands and accessible, high-velocity mobile-centric interfaces, the firm empowers modern commercial organizations to radically accelerate their workforce-resilience velocity, eliminate systemic burnout-bottlenecks, and build an unassailable foundation for continuous commercial and institutional success in the modern, AI-transformed global-healthcare landscape.
