About Us:

Ground News is a platform that makes it easy to compare news sources, read between the lines of media bias and break free from algorithms.

In a world where political polarization and media distrust are at an all-time high, Ground News offers people a better way to stay informed and see every side of the story. Our mobile app, web app, and browser extension are home to a community of mindful readers who use our news comparison platform to engage with news beyond their filter bubble.

Unlike most news companies, our values do not align with any specific political ideology. Unlike most tech platforms, we don't rely on algorithms to keep users on our platform to sell more ads. We are supported by our readers who pay for a subscription to build a more nuanced understanding of the news, the world, and themselves.

The Opportunity: Staff Frontend Engineer

As a Staff Engineer, you'll own the technical direction of the web properties that turn curious visitors into engaged subscribers. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone with a strong, data-informed track record of growing both the user base and revenue from web.

You'll sit within the Frontend chapter and work day-to-day out of the Growth & Monetization pod, partnering closely with Revenue Growth, Marketing, the Sponsorships team, and Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) function. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you'll set the bar for how we build, measure, and experiment on the web.

Our web stack is Next.js and React in TypeScript, deployed via Flightcontrol. You'll bring deep fluency in modern frontend engineering together with a growth mindset: you think in funnels, experiments, and conversion, and you have informed views on what moves the numbers on a consumer web property.

A defining goal of this role is to make our CRO, Marketing, and Sponsorships partners self-sufficient. Within your first 90–180 days, success looks like a marketing or growth teammate being able to ship a landing-page change, a modal, or a pricing experiment without an engineer in the loop. You'll evaluate and mature tooling: visual page and landing-page builders, experimentation platforms, analytics and CDP integrations.

This is a high-agency, staff-level role. You'll operate as the senior technical voice for web: shaping architecture, raising code quality, and steering the experimentation roadmap that compounds growth over time.

What You'll Do:

  • Own the technical strategy for Ground News' web properties, with a direct mandate to grow the user base and subscription revenue from web.

  • Build and ship high-quality Next.js / React / TypeScript experiences across our marketing site, landing pages, paywall, and conversion surfaces.

  • Partner with the CRO, Growth, Marketing, and Sponsorships functions to translate hypotheses into experiments, making those partners self-sufficient so they can change landing pages, modals, and copy without engineering in the loop.

  • Own and evolve the marketing-tech stack: today our landing pages run on Unbounce, with a likely future migration to Framer, alongside A/B testing and experimentation platforms and analytics / CDP tooling: you'll lead that evolution and design the guardrails that keep it safe and performant.

  • Mature and add rigour to our web experimentation program: framing hypotheses, sizing impact, ensuring clean measurement, and shipping winners while reading results honestly.

  • Set the bar for web performance, accessibility, SEO, and Core Web Vitals on a consumer property serving millions of readers.

  • Act as the senior voice in code review and architecture for the frontend chapter, expediting the PR process and raising overall engineering quality.

  • Manage safe rollouts on Flightcontrol: feature flagging, monitoring conversion and stability, and mitigating risk on revenue-critical surfaces.

  • Maintain instrumentation of the funnel end to end so the team can trust its analytics and make decisions from data.

What You'll Bring:

  • A solid track record of growing the user base and revenue from web properties. You can point to specific outcomes you drove.

  • Deep expertise building production web applications in Next.js, React, and TypeScript.

  • Hands-on experience working with or alongside a CRO function, including fluency in the tooling and best practices of modern marketing technology.

  • A demonstrated track record of running web experimentation (A/B and multivariate testing) and strong, well-formed opinions on how to do it well.

  • Experience standing up self-serve tooling (visual page and landing-page builders such as Unbounce or Framer, headless content, experimentation platforms) that lets non-engineers ship changes safely; experience migrating between such platforms is a plus.

  • Hands-on experience with PostHog is highly valued (Amplitude or Segment are acceptable substitutes), along with the instrumentation behind a trustworthy funnel.

  • A sharp eye for web performance, accessibility, SEO, and conversion on consumer-scale properties.

  • Experience shipping changes safely to production, including feature flagging, monitoring, and risk mitigation on revenue-critical surfaces.

  • A collaborative, cross-functional approach: you're comfortable acting as a senior technical voice and partnering closely with Growth, Marketing, and CRO.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience technically coaching or mentoring engineers.

  • Experience with a subscription or consumer-media product and its growth motions.

Ground News (operating under ground.news, legally Snapwise Inc.) is the premier, enterprise-grade news comparison platform, media bias analytics pioneer, and data-driven information transparency powerhouse engineered to act as the definitive, high-visibility objective aggregation layer, real-time reporting synthesis system, and algorithmic bias metrics framework for global citizens, news consumers, and researchers. Founded in 2018 by former NASA space systems engineer Harleen Kaur and award-winning application architect Sukh Singh, the corporate ecosystem completely eliminates the severe systemic friction of modern digital media consumption—where algorithmically driven echo chambers, partisan editorial spins, filter bubbles, and hidden institutional ownership structures distort public reality and amplify social polarization—by deploying a continuous, natural language processing (NLP) driven aggregation matrix. Moving far beyond traditional, passive RSS feeds, curated editorial news hubs, or localized syndications, Ground News natively unifies the deep structural ingestion of over 60,000 global news articles daily, multi-point cross-spectrum bias charting, factual accountability tracking, and transparent corporate media ownership profiling into a single high-availability verification platform. Under the hood, its advanced software architecture cross-references real-time story clusters across more than 50,000 independent and mainstream media outlets, evaluating individual publisher metrics against standardized bias data sets from elite monitoring agencies including AllSides, Ad Fontes Media, and Media Bias/Fact Check to calculate a definitive, multi-dimensional profile for every breaking story. A cornerstone of its product engine is the proprietary Blindspot Feed, a specialized data visualization environment that surfaces critical national and international stories receiving vastly asymmetric coverage or complete media omission on either side of the political spectrum. Headquartered in Ontario, Canada, the private enterprise operates on a robust, community-supported freemium subscription infrastructure, securing institutional acceleration and strategic backing from elite mission-aligned investment groups including Techstars, 37 Angels, and Something Good Ventures to scale its data processing layers. What sets Ground News apart is its uncompromising dedication to replacing passive, algorithmically isolated content feeds with explicit source comparison, transparent corporate context, and cognitive empowerment; by bridging the gap between high-volume programmatic media repositories and clear, balanced narrative visibility, the corporation remains a definitive cornerstone of modern civic technology and global news consumption transformation.
