About the job

The Compliance Experiences team sits at the heart of the Twilio platform, owning two critical domains: Phone Numbers and Compliance (KYC).

In 2026, "getting a phone number" is no longer a simple API call; it requires sophisticated orchestration across global phone number inventory, real-time identity verification, regulatory compliance, and operational tooling at massive scale.

Twilio’s KYC Platform, the gateway to accessing all of Twilio’s communication APIs, enables customers to securely provision and operate communication services globally while navigating complex, constantly evolving regulatory requirements.

As a Software Engineer (L3), you will be a key technical contributor driving the feature design, execution, and operational health of platform services that process millions of requests. You will build scalable, high-performance solutions while working closely with engineering partners across Twilio to ensure alignment. You will own end-to-end feature delivery, author technical specs, and build robust APIs, microservices, and tooling relied on by cross-functional stakeholders.

You will embrace AI-driven development workflows, using LLMs and agentic tools to accelerate code generation, expand automated test coverage, and translate complex business and regulatory requirements into executable logic. Your mission is to turn technical designs and blueprints into reliable, production-grade features.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • DRAW THE OWL: Contribute significantly to the technical design and roadmap for core platform components, authoring technical specifications and driving execution to transition legacy systems into modern, scalable cloud-native microservices.
  • ACCELERATE WITH AI: Actively leverage AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Anthropic Claude, or internal LLMs) to automate boilerplate, generate comprehensive test suites, and rapidly prototype solutions. Set an example within the team for amplifying individual velocity while maintaining high standards of code quality and safety guardrails.
  • BE AN OWNER: Drive technical excellence and end-to-end component ownership within your team, making sound technical decisions that balance rapid feature delivery with system reliability, security, and technical debt reduction.
  • WEAR THE CUSTOMER’S SHOES: Partner with Product Managers and cross-functional stakeholders to translate customer needs and regulatory requirements into precise technical specifications, developer-first APIs, and seamless application workflows.
  • EMPOWER OTHERS: Mentor and uplift junior engineers (L1–L2), onboard new team members, and foster a collaborative environment through constructive code reviews, tech talks, and technical guidance.
  • RUTHLESSLY PRIORITIZE: Proactively identify and resolve technical risks, performance bottlenecks, and security vulnerabilities within team services. Fully own on-call responsibilities, driving incident resolution and following through with durable root-cause remediation.
  • WRITE IT DOWN: Articulate technical designs, system trade-offs, and operational runbooks clearly to your team and cross-functional partners through high-quality design documents, RFCs, and thorough documentation.

Qualifications

Twilio values diverse experiences from all kinds of industries, and we encourage everyone who meets the required qualifications to apply. If your career is just starting or hasn’t followed a traditional path, don’t let that stop you from considering Twilio. We are always looking for people who will bring something new to the table!

*Required:

  • 5+ years of experience designing and developing highly available, high-scale, secure, mission-critical cloud-native enterprise distributed systems.
  • Strong Proficiency in Java or Go, with solid knowledge of AWS ecosystems (Lambda, EKS, DynamoDB, Kafka).
  • Cloud-Native Architecture: Hands-on experience with cloud-native infrastructure (AWS preferred), microservices patterns, and building highly resilient systems.
  • AI-Augmented Development: Practical experience using AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, Cursor) to accelerate software delivery. You should be comfortable discussing how you use LLMs for debugging, code synthesis, and prototyping.
  • API Design: Experience building and maintaining high-volume public-facing APIs with a focus on developer experience.
  • Data Proficiency: Experience with high-throughput data processing and storage solutions (SQL/NoSQL, Redis, Kafka, or Spark).
  • Infrastructure as Code: Familiarity with Kubernetes, Terraform, and modern CI/CD paradigms.
  • Collaboration & Influence: Demonstrated ability to influence technical decisions within your team through strong communication and technical credibility.

Desired:

  • Platform Thinking: Experience building "internal platforms" that enable other developer teams to move faster.
  • Agentic Systems: Experience building or integrating AI agents into internal developer platforms or automated ops workflows.

Twilio is the world’s leading Cloud Communications Platform (CPaaS) that enables developers to build, scale, and operate real-time customer engagement within their software applications. Instead of dealing with complex telecom hardware, companies use Twilio’s powerful APIs to add communication capabilities—like SMS messaging, voice calls, video, and email—directly into their code. From verifying user identities via 2FA codes to powering customer support chat centers and marketing emails (via SendGrid), Twilio bridges the gap between the internet and the global telecommunications network.
