9amHealth is an AI-enabled virtual specialty care platform focused on managing high-cost chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. The company partners with employers, health plans, and pharmacy benefit managers to deliver comprehensive, cost-effective medical care through specialized clinicians, at-home lab testing, prescription medications, and lifestyle support.

About the Role

The role of Senior Product Designer involves leading design for the member app, which is central to managing care for conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and weight. This is a senior individual contributor position for someone with strong craftsmanship, clear opinions, and the ability to transform complex problems into thoughtful, well-executed experiences.

The scope includes designing for labs, medications, virtual visits, education, nutrition, and tracking. Priorities will determine focus areas, with recent emphasis on nutrition and upcoming work on movement and mental health support. The goal is to ease the burden of managing complex conditions without adding unnecessary work.

Designing for behavior change requires judgment. Members have complex clinical needs, and some may be vulnerable to disordered eating patterns. The designer will collaborate with clinicians to create supportive, non-pressure, and shame-free experiences, measuring success through product performance and member value.

The member app connects directly to an in-house electronic medical record system (EMR). Clinical data informs member views, and member actions trigger Care Team workflows. Understanding these connections and considering both care providers and recipients is essential.

Reporting to the Head of Design, the role involves collaboration with product managers, front-end and back-end engineers, QA, and other product designers. The team is distributed across San Diego, California, and Vienna, Austria, with Eastern Time hours.

What You'll Do

• Lead design across the member app, taking priority problems from discovery through detailed interaction and visual design, implementation, and iteration. Stay involved through delivery and ensure the quality of the shipped experience.

• Make care easier to follow through on by designing onboarding, care tasks, habit-building experiences, and re-engagement strategies to help members understand and act on their next steps.

• Use data to guide and evaluate work by partnering with the squad to define success, instrument key interactions, and assess metrics like activation, funnel conversion, task completion, retention, and sustained engagement. Connect these metrics to member value and improve the product accordingly.

• Build prototypes that answer real questions, using code-based prototypes and AI-assisted tools like Cursor or Claude to test behavior, explore ideas, and collaborate with engineers.

• Stay close to members by running research to understand their needs, test assumptions, and identify areas where the experience helps or gets in the way.

• Strengthen the design system by collaborating with designers and engineers to evolve accessible components and interaction patterns for consistency and ease of building.

• Design with Care Team operations in mind by working with clinicians, coaches, and care coordinators to understand how member-facing decisions affect their workflows and reduce avoidable work.

• Make and explain difficult trade-offs by balancing member needs, clinical considerations, operational capacity, and business goals. Document decisions for future reference and learning.

What We're Looking For

• Strong craft backed by product judgment with experience leading design for a consumer product or substantial product area, from ambiguous problems to shipped outcomes. Attention to interaction, visual hierarchy, content, and details that make an experience feel finished.

• A clear point of view with the ability to bring ideas, challenge assumptions, critique your own work, respond to feedback, and change direction based on evidence.

• Comfort with product metrics and the ability to explain changes post-launch, measure impact, and use quantitative data with research to understand product performance.

• Thoughtful behavior-change design with an understanding of motivation, progress, and setbacks, helping people build habits and return after lapses without guilt, pressure, or ineffective rewards.

• Research that informs decisions with knowledge of appropriate methods, useful questions, and turning findings into product or priority changes.

• Fluency with modern prototyping tools, knowing when Figma prototypes suffice and when to build more functional prototypes. Ability to use AI-assisted tools critically and refine their output.

• A practical understanding of accessibility, designing interfaces and information usable by people with varying abilities, health literacy, and tech confidence.

• Initiative and clear communication, making progress with incomplete information, asking sharp questions, and bringing the team along through clear writing and direct conversation.
