The Senior Director, Consumer Insights will lead ecoATM Gazelle’s consumer and market insights function, providing a data-driven understanding of customer behavior, motivations, and market trends to inform product, marketing, and business strategy.

This role will build a scalable insights capability, spanning quantitative and qualitative research, first-party kiosk transaction and behavioral data, and competitive/market intelligence to provide leadership clear visibility into the customer journey and emerging opportunities. This is a highly visible role during ecoATM Gazelle’s post-acquisition growth phase and IPO readiness period, partnering closely with the Executive Management Team (EMT) to ensure strategic investment decisions are grounded in a strong understanding of the consumer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end consumer insights strategy, including synthesizing primary research (surveys, focus groups, interviews), first-party transactional data, behavioral analytics, competitive intelligence, and market trends into actionable recommendations that translate into action across the organization.
  • Establish an aligned-upon consumer learning agenda that prioritizes the most important strategic questions facing the business.
  • Establish and manage processes to partner with Marketing, Product, and Business Development to embed consumer insights into go-to-market strategy, product roadmap decisions, and channel/partnership evaluation (e.g., retail embedding, enterprise channels).
  • Develop segmentation models and customer journey maps to inform targeting and experience design.
  • Track competitive landscape and market trends relevant to recommerce, consumer electronics, and adjacent categories.
  • Present insights and recommendations to the Executive Management Team and board as part of strategic planning and IPO narrative development.
  • Manage relationships with external research vendors and panels; oversee research budget.
  • Establish insights reporting cadence and self-service dashboards/tools so stakeholders across the business can access consumer data.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Statistics, Psychology, Business, or related field; advanced degree a plus.
  • 8+ years of consumer/market research or insights experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong quantitative skills, including experience with survey design, segmentation, and statistical analysis.
  • Experience translating research into clear, actionable business recommendations for senior leadership.
  • Familiarity with behavioral/transactional data analysis in addition to traditional survey-based research.
  • Excellent presentation and storytelling skills; comfortable presenting to executive leadership and the board.
  • Experience in retail, consumer electronics, recommerce, or a fast-paced, PE-backed environment preferred.

Success Metrics (First 12 Months)

  • Consumer insights meaningfully influence major strategic decisions across product, marketing, and partnerships.
  • Development of actionable customer segmentation, journey maps, and behavioral frameworks.
  • Measurable business impact of research-driven recommendations.
  • Increased effectiveness of product launches, customer experiences, and marketing campaigns informed by consumer insights.
  • Establishment of a scalable framework that continuously improves the organization’s understanding of customers and the market.

ecoATM (operating under ecoatm.com) is the pioneer and global leader in automated, kiosk-based consumer electronics recycling and instant-cash re-commerce platforms. Founded in 2008 by wireless entrepreneur Mark Bowles alongside Michael Librizzi and David G.B. Troy in San Diego, California, the company was built to tackle the massive global problem of e-waste by creating a frictionless hardware-and-software solution for recycling unused mobile devices. ecoATM designs and deploys smart "reverse vending machines" placed across highly trafficked retail locations like Walmart, Kroger, and major shopping malls. These physical kiosks utilize advanced, patented computer vision, machine learning diagnostics, and 3D imaging systems to instantly analyze a device's make, model, cosmetic integrity, and internal functionality, generating a precise market-based cash valuation in under five minutes. To prevent the trade of stolen property, ecoATM's software architecture features deep compliance integration, deploying real-time biometric thumbprint validation, government ID scanning, and a live interface with national law enforcement databases. Acquired by Outerwall Inc. for $350 million in 2013 and later taken private under Apollo Global Management in 2016, the brand expanded its ecosystem by acquiring Gazelle.com to serve as its primary direct-to-consumer e-commerce marketplace for certified pre-owned, refurbished devices. Bolstered by a strategic $75 million growth capital injection from Cowen Sustainable Investments, ecoATM has scaled aggressively. By 2026, the company operates a network of over 7,000 automated kiosks globally, having processed more than 50 million total recycled devices and distributed over $1.5 billion in cumulative payouts to consumers across the United States, the United Kingdom, and testing footprints in Europe and Canada.
