Role Overview

Front is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to bridge the gap between design and engineering. This role involves building and maintaining a production-quality design system across Figma, Storybook, and code, ensuring consistency, accessibility, and maintainability.

You’ll own the design system’s evolution, creating reusable components, reducing design/code drift, and establishing best practices for high-quality UI development.

This is a hands-on, high-leverage role requiring strong frontend engineering judgment, UI craftsmanship, and deep design-system experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve Front’s design system across Figma, Storybook, and production code, ensuring a clear source of truth.
  • Build, refactor, and maintain reusable, accessible, well-documented UI components for product teams.
  • Identify and reduce design/code drift in existing component libraries and legacy UI patterns.
  • Establish patterns, conventions, and guardrails for consistency, accessibility, and developer experience.
  • Prototype new interaction patterns and reference implementations to de-risk product decisions.
  • Collaborate with Product Designers, Product Managers, and Engineers to define high-quality workflows.
  • Leverage AI tools thoughtfully to accelerate prototyping, iteration, and maintenance.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 6+ years of experience designing and building production frontend experiences, ideally in complex B2B SaaS or enterprise software.
  • Strong frontend engineering skills with modern web technologies and component-based architecture.
  • High UI/UX craft and strong product taste, with expertise in accessibility (semantic HTML, ARIA, keyboard interactions).
  • Experience with component libraries, Storybook, visual regression workflows, Figma plugins, or design-token pipelines.
  • Strong communication skills to explain technical decisions to both specialists and non-specialists.
  • Portfolio or body of work showing shipped design-engineering impact (e.g., production UI, component systems, Storybook examples).

Bonus Experience

  • Working on products with large frontend surfaces, multiple teams, and evolving design systems.
  • Experience in customer support, collaboration software, or workflow-heavy SaaS products.
  • Consolidating fragmented component libraries or aligning Figma libraries with production code.
  • Using AI-assisted coding/design tools for prototyping and iteration.

What You’ll Bring to Front

  • A systems mindset focused on patterns, edge cases, and long-term maintenance.
  • A high craft bar with attention to detail in visual polish, accessibility, and usability.
  • A builder’s bias—preferring to make ideas real in code and iterate quickly.
  • A collaborative approach that raises the quality of work for designers and engineers.
  • Senior-level judgment to operate through ambiguity and prioritize high-leverage improvements.

Compensation & Perks

  • Competitive salary
  • Equity (post-series D, backed by top VCs)
  • Private health insurance (including no-cost plan options)
  • Paid parental leave
  • Flexible time off policy
  • Flexibility to work from home Monday and Friday
  • Mental health support with Workplace Options
  • Family planning support with Maven
  • $100/month Lifestyle Stipend (fitness, wellness, etc.)
  • Wellness Days and Winter Break (offices closed Dec 25–Jan 1)
