Key Skills Required
Master these to land this role
Want to know if you're a match for this job?
Backpack Healthcare is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced CPA to join our team as a part-time Senior Accountant and take ownership of our monthly close and financial reporting process.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys autonomy, flexibility, and meaningful work without the commitment of a full-time role.
You’ll step into an established accounting environment with documented procedures, reconciled accounts, organized records, and a structured month-end close process. This is not a bookkeeping cleanup project — you’ll be responsible for maintaining the integrity of our financial statements and providing accurate, timely financial reporting to executive leadership and external stakeholders.
What You’ll Do
You’ll independently manage our recurring accounting and month-end close responsibilities, including:
- Own the monthly close process from start to finish
- Review and code daily bank and credit card transactions in QuickBooks Online
- Record semimonthly payroll journal entries based on payroll provider reports
- Prepare and record journal entries, accruals, and other accounting adjustments
- Complete balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules
- Review financial activity for accuracy, completeness, and appropriate accounting treatment
- Prepare monthly Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Statement of Cash Flows
- Maintain accounting workpapers and close documentation
- Support year-end audit requests and schedules
- Occasionally review new grants, contracts, or funding agreements to determine appropriate accounting treatment and reporting requirements
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and increase efficiency
What Your Schedule Looks Like
This role is designed to provide maximum flexibility with a predictable monthly scope of work.
The engagement is approximately 40 hours per month, with most work concentrated around:
- 🧾 Daily: Brief transaction review and sync in QuickBooks Online
- 💵 Twice monthly: Payroll journal entries
- 📊 Month-end: Monthly close and financial reporting
The monthly close should be completed within the first week of the following month, but you’ll have flexibility in how you manage those hours. Evening and weekend work is completely acceptable when it fits your schedule.
As you become familiar with our systems and processes, we anticipate the close becoming increasingly efficient.
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Active CPA license in good standing in any U.S. state
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Demonstrated experience independently managing month-end close
- Strong knowledge of accrual-based accounting and U.S. GAAP
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online
- Experience preparing complete financial statements
- Strong account reconciliation and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- U.S.-based
Preferred Qualifications
- Healthcare industry experience, particularly behavioral health, medical practice, or healthcare services
- Grant accounting experience
- Contract revenue accounting experience
- Experience supporting external audits
- Previous experience as a fractional or contract accountant for a growth-stage organization
Why You’ll Love This Opportunity

🎯 Meaningful Ownership — You’ll own the close and financial reporting process rather than simply supporting pieces of it.
