At Headlands Research, we are building a best-in-class clinical trial network. We’re an exceptional family of next-generation clinical trial sites and high-quality support services. Founded in 2018, our company operates 26 clinical trial sites in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada with rapid plans for expansion.

The Role

The regional accounting manager is an integral member of the management team, reporting directly to the Headlands Research corporate controller and partnering regularly with operations. The role’s primary responsibility is to oversee the entire finance and accounting function for multiple clinical trial site locations (5-10 sites, with opportunity to increase as sites are added), including but not limited to monthly financial close, monthly financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, and accounts payable oversight. The regional accounting manager is one of several peer roles across the organization who support other clinical trial site locations in the overall Headlands Research network. The role will assist in ensuring a strong internal control environment and compliance with company policies and US GAAP.

This is a remote role with regular working hours—including regular meetings held via electronic platforms.

This role does not have any direct reports. Rather, this role is situated in a matrixed organization—accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger support are provided centrally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the monthly accounting and reporting process for sites supported
  • Prepare monthly reporting packages submitted to executive management
  • Actively engage with site operations to understand and influence revenue levers
  • Provide budget-to-actual analysis for monthly financial results, including detailed analysis of budget-to-actual and forecast-to-actual revenues by study
  • Partner with regional and site operations management teams, providing guidance and support on day-to-day accounting matters
  • Perform the annual budget process with site directors
  • Perform financial analysis as required to support the business
  • Perform accounting functions for sites within NetSuite cloud-based accounting system under accrual method accounting in accordance with US GAAP, including preparing and/or posting journal entries
  • Maintain ongoing reconciliations between the accounts receivable sub-system and the general ledger
  • Review balance sheet reconciliations for assigned sites
  • Monitor, and participate where needed, in the accounts receivable and collection processes led by central billing and collections team
  • Oversee the accounts payable function, including the annual 1099 process
  • Oversee any accounting processes performed centrally on behalf of assigned sites
  • Oversee cash management using online banking for sites supported—including remitting excess funds
  • Assist any newly acquired or de novo sites in their onboarding process to Headlands Research
  • Provide support for audit, tax, and other information as requested
  • Assist staff with training and development
  • Other projects as assigned

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Experience managing financials for multiple business units or entities preferred
  • A Bachelor’s degree in accounting is required; CPA is strongly preferred
  • 5-7 years of accounting experience
  • Knowledge of GAAP accounting, financial analysis, and budgeting
  • Hands-on experience through the full accounting cycle of a business unit
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate with non-accounting professionals
  • Must have strong Excel skills; NetSuite experience is a plus
  • Team player
  • Infrequent travel required

Headlands Research

View Company Profile

Headlands Research (operating at headlandsresearch.com) is a multinational, integrated clinical trial site organization engineered for accelerating the development of innovative medical therapies. Founded in 2018 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, Headlands Research specializes in streamlining clinical research operations—a domain traditionally plagued by fragmented site management, regulatory complexity, and inefficiencies. Unlike traditional contract research organizations (CROs) that often operate in silos, Headlands Research consolidates trial execution across multiple therapeutic areas, including Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders, Pain, Respiratory, and general medicine, with a proven track record in high-impact studies like COVID-19 trials. Under the hood, the company leverages a globally integrated network of clinical sites, ensuring standardized protocols, real-time data management, and seamless collaboration between sponsors, investigators, and patients. This allows pharmaceutical companies and biotech firms to accelerate trial timelines, reduce operational costs, and improve patient recruitment and retention. While specific funding details remain proprietary, the company’s acquisition by THL in 2021 underscores its strategic value in the clinical research ecosystem.
