The Role
Purpose of the role
As a Product Manager you'll own a core area of the Shape platform end to end, from the customer problem through to the outcome it produces on a live project.
You'll be accountable for a measurable business outcome for our customers, not for a feature list. Our platform spans two very different worlds, and both matter. On one side, the site: supervisors, field engineers and site managers working in conditions where an app has about five seconds to prove it's worth opening. On the other, the office: project directors, commercial directors and quantity surveyors who need to trust what they're looking at enough to make a call on it. Value only appears when those two sides connect, and that connection is what we build.
Depending on where you're strongest and what the business needs, you might own the field side, the commercial side, or the seam between them. In every case the standard is the same: real adoption by people who have no obligation to use us, and a concrete outcome for the project as a result.
You'll also be at the front of how AI shows up in our products. A meaningful part of our ambition depends on AI doing genuinely hard things well in a domain with very little tolerance for confident nonsense, the stakes for our users are commercial and often contractual. You'll be the person who decides where AI earns its place, and where it doesn't.
Team
You'll be part of our Product team, working shoulder to shoulder with engineering, design, and our consultancy delivery teams, who are on live projects every day and are the sharpest feedback loop any product team could ask for. You'll also work closely with growth and customer success to make sure what we build reaches the people who need it.
Your top five responsibilities
- Own the outcome: You will own a product area end to end, the problem, the strategy, the roadmap and the results. You'll define what success looks like in customer and commercial terms, and you'll be honest about whether we hit it.
- Get close to the problem, on both sides: You'll spend real time on live projects, in the site cabin and in the commercial meeting, with our consultancy teams, and in the data. You'll build a deeper understanding of how a construction project actually runs, and of the commercial machinery behind it, than most people in our industry have, and use it to make sharp calls about what to build and what to refuse.
- Ship AI that holds up in the real world: You'll take AI features from concept to production in a domain where being wrong has consequences. You'll design for human-in-the-loop where the stakes demand it, set the bar for evaluating output quality, and make sure we never ship something that sounds confident and is wrong.
- Drive the roadmap and the trade-offs: You'll sequence work into cycles, make the hard prioritisation calls, and communicate them clearly enough that everyone from an engineer to a founder understands why. You'll say no often and well.
- Grow yourself and others: We're big on learning and development. You'll raise the product craft around you, give and receive candid feedback, and help build a world-class product function as we scale.
Your Capabilities
You are a product person who is genuinely curious about how things work and impatient about whether they're actually helping anyone. You'd rather find out you were wrong in two weeks than be right in a year. You can hold a strong opinion and change it in front of evidence without ego.
Must-Have (The fundamentals)
- Mastery: Proven experience managing enterprise SaaS products end to end, with a clear track record of driving business outcomes for customers - not just shipping features. You understand enterprise realities: long sales cycles, multiple stakeholders, procurement, security, adoption inside organisations that don't change easily.
- Mastery (AI): Real, hands-on proficiency with AI. You've shipped or seriously prototyped AI-powered features, you understand what LLMs are good and bad at, and you can reason about retrieval and grounding, evaluation, hallucination risk, cost and latency trade-offs, and where a human must stay in the loop. You use AI tools daily in your own work and it shows.
- Range: You can design for a user in a hi-vis vest with one hand free and poor signal, and for a director who needs to defend a number in a room full of people who'd rather they couldn't. Products that serve both are harder than products that serve either, and you find that interesting rather than annoying.
- Communication: A clear and compelling communicator. You can make a complex product argument simple, write a crisp strategy document, and hold your own with both a site-based engineer and a senior business leader. You build relationships through a humanistic, empathetic approach, because our customers aren't just users!
- Leadership: You take ownership. You don't wait for permission, you don't hide behind process, and you're comfortable making a decision with incomplete information and being accountable for it.
- Impact: You can read between the lines, spot the opportunity nobody asked for, and measure whether it worked. You're rigorous with data but you don't hide behind it.
- Domain: Ideally some experience in construction, engineering, real estate, or an adjacent complex operational industry (infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, logistics, field services). What matters most is that you can get deep into a hard, physical, unglamorous domain and love it.
Nice to Have (If you don't have it now you will after joining)
- Mastery: Experience with mobile-first or field-facing products used in tough physical conditions, and/or with commercial workflows, contracts, change control, claims, cost management, or with products where the output carries legal or contractual weight. If you're not an expert in construction or digital project delivery yet, you will be! We'll give you the tools and knowledge to speak the industry's language.
- Communication: Experience taking a product to market with sales and marketing, and telling its story publicly, talks, writing, or an extensive network in construction and/or tech.
- Leadership: Early leadership or people management exposure, experience coaching or mentoring other PMs. We're growing fast, and we want our best product people to step up and take on bigger responsibilities. If you're ambitious, there's a clear path to more.
- Impact: Experience scaling a product from early traction to a genuine platform, and the scars that come with it. Beyond hitting delivery targets, you'll play a key role in shaping how construction teams adopt technology, and that's a rare thing to be able to say about your work.
Shape isn't the place for you if any of the following is true:
- You want an easy role without much challenge
- You like to be the smartest person in the room
- You don't like continuously receiving honest candid feedback
- You prefer to do your own thing rather than work with a team
- You'd rather report on activity than be measured on an outcome
