SpecterOps is searching for a mid-level back-end software engineer to join our Internal and Community Products team. This team develops and maintains internal and open-source projects such as Mythic and Ghostwriter. Because we believe in transparency and open source, we are committed to maintaining, growing, and supporting these projects for the benefit of the security community.

As a Software Engineer, you will design, develop, maintain, and document back-end components across our projects using languages and technologies such as Python, Go, Docker, and PostgreSQL. The work spans web applications, REST and GraphQL APIs, command-line tools, containerized services, and infrastructure automation, including technologies such as Ansible and Terraform.

Our software plays an active role in authorized adversarial cybersecurity operations, including penetration testing and red team engagements. A security background is not required; we can teach the security concepts and workflows needed to work effectively on these projects. We are a small team, so successful candidates should be comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy, taking ownership of problems, and collaborating with teammates when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, support, and maintain back-end components of our internal and open-source projects.
  • Develop and maintain REST and GraphQL APIs, services, command-line tools, data models, and integrations using languages such as Python and Go.
  • Work with containerized applications and supporting services using technologies such as Docker and Docker Compose.
  • Contribute to infrastructure automation and deployment tooling using technologies such as Ansible and Terraform.
  • Independently investigate technical problems, evaluate potential solutions, and drive work through implementation, testing, and release.
  • Write and maintain automated tests and participate in code reviews to improve software quality and maintainability.
  • Follow SpecterOps’ code style guides and development processes.
  • Contribute to and maintain technical documentation for the components and features you develop.
  • Assist internal users encountering problems with project components.
  • Monitor and participate in external discussions, issues, and pull requests on GitHub related to our open-source projects.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of software design and application development experience.
  • Experience developing extensible APIs and highly maintainable services.
  • Professional experience with back-end languages such as Go, Python, or comparable languages.
  • Familiarity with relational database technologies such as PostgreSQL.
  • Experience working with Git and modern collaborative software development workflows.
  • Experience developing or supporting containerized applications using Docker or similar technologies.
  • Ability to independently investigate problems, make sound technical decisions, and take ownership of work through completion.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies and domain concepts as project needs evolve.
  • Strong attention to detail, plus solid written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize groups of tasks.
  • Desire to embody our core values of passionate curiosity, consistent improvement, empathy, sustainability, humility, and empowerment through transparency.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal background investigation.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with Django, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, Docker Compose, Ansible, or Terraform.
  • Experience developing command-line applications or tooling.
  • Experience contributing to or maintaining open-source software.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity, penetration testing, red team operations, or other adversarial security disciplines.
  • Familiarity with Jira and Agile sprint planning.
  • Experience working across multiple languages, services, or software projects.

SpecterOps is the premier, enterprise-grade cybersecurity solutions pioneer, Identity Attack Path Management innovator, and offensive tradecraft powerhouse engineered to operate as the definitive, proactive defense and threat elimination layer for global enterprises, financial institutions, and national security networks. The company completely eliminates the severe systemic friction of modern enterprise infrastructure defense—where security operations center (SOC) cells struggle against complex, deeply nested privilege escalation paths, misconfigured directory service permissions, and invisible lateral adversary movements that bypass traditional endpoint detection systems—by deploying an advanced, graph-based security ecosystem. Moving far beyond traditional, passive vulnerability scanners or generic penetration testing services, SpecterOps natively unifies real-time identity relationship mapping across Active Directory and Azure AD (Entra ID), automated security choke-point isolation, step-by-step impact-aware remediation pipelines, and elite red-teaming adversary simulations into its flagship corporate workspace, BloodHound Enterprise. As the creators and maintainers of BloodHound—the world's leading open-source tool for visualizing hidden directory attack paths trusted by an ecosystem of over 20,000 security experts—the institution empowers global security cells to enforce strict least-privilege models and dismantle millions of exploit paths with a single strategic patch. Under the hood, its sophisticated technical practice—backed by a massive $75 million Series B funding round led by Insight Partners along with Cisco Investments and M12—natively orchestrates advanced graph database infrastructure pipelines, patent-protected directory services analysis loops, and secure cloud-to-edge risk profiling grids. What sets SpecterOps apart is its uncompromising dedication to replacing blind, reactive patching cycles with absolute threat-informed architectural momentum; by bridging the gap between deep offensive research and automated, deterministic enterprise hazard mitigation, the firm remains the definitive cornerstone of modern enterprise identity protection and cloud security management.
