Medical Science Manager (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) - Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical

As Medical Science Manager covering Germany, Austria and Switzerland, you will be a field-based member of the DACH Medical Affairs team and act as a trusted scientific partner for healthcare professionals, key opinion leaders, centers of excellence and other relevant external stakeholders. You will provide accurate, fair-balanced and compliant scientific and medical exchange across Ultragenyx rare disease programs, marketed products and pipeline assets.

The role includes gathering and documenting actionable medical insights, supporting local and EMEA medical strategies, contributing to launch readiness and clinical development activities, and helping to improve patient outcomes through high-quality scientific engagement. The Medical Science Manager reports to the Cluster Medical Lead DACH and works closely with EMEA Medical Affairs and relevant cross-functional partners.

Work Model:

Field: Officially documented as working as a member of the Ultragenyx field team, generally interacting with third parties on behalf of Ultragenyx.

Responsibilities:

• Act as a trusted and credible medical science discussion partner by engaging in appropriate scientific and medical exchange with HCPs, KOLs, centers of excellence and other relevant stakeholders across the DACH cluster.
• Identify, develop and maintain high-quality scientific relationships with external experts, academic centers, professional societies and relevant medical organizations in the assigned therapeutic areas.
• Gather, document and communicate actionable medical insights from external stakeholders to inform local and EMEA medical strategy, scientific planning and patient-focused initiatives.
• Develop and execute a strategic territory plan aligned with the DACH medical plan, EMEA priorities and relevant product or disease area strategies.
• Provide clinical and scientific presentations, medical information updates and responses to unsolicited medical questions in academic, community and healthcare provider settings, including congresses and compliant educational initiatives.
• Identify HCP educational gaps and patient pathway opportunities, including center mapping, diagnostic pathways, referral patterns and unmet needs in rare diseases.
• Support clinical development, evidence generation and real-world evidence activities as appropriate, including clinical trial site identification, investigator engagement, investigator-sponsored research and publication-related activities.
• Contribute to launch readiness, pipeline activities and cross-functional execution by partnering with Medical Affairs, Clinical Operations, Market Access, Commercial, Regulatory, PV/QA and EMEA colleagues where appropriate.
• Support DACH-specific Market Access and German HTA processes, including AMNOG-related scientific input, value dossier generation and medical preparation for external stakeholder interactions where appropriate.
• Ensure all activities are conducted in a non-promotional, fair-balanced and compliant manner, in line with company policies, SOPs, local codes and applicable regulations.

Requirements:

• Advanced degree in a clinical, medical, pharmaceutical or life sciences discipline strongly preferred, such as MD, PhD, PharmD, MSc, MSN, MPH or equivalent relevant qualification.
• Minimum 1-3 years of relevant Medical Affairs, field medical, clinical, scientific or pharmaceutical industry experience; prior MSL/MSM experience is preferred.
• Rare disease or orphan drug experience is preferred, particularly in metabolic, genetic or advanced therapy-related disease areas.
• Strong scientific acumen, with the ability to analyze scientific literature, communicate complex data clearly and translate external insights into practical medical strategy input.
• Demonstrated ability to build credible external relationships, present clinical and scientific information effectively in live and virtual settings, and work independently in a field-based role.
• Fluent in German and English; additional language skills relevant to Switzerland are an advantage.
• Regular travel across the assigned territory is required; overnight travel and congress attendance may be required as needed.
