AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today’s five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.

We are seeking a Mechanisms Engineer to support the design, development, and optimization of precision mechanical systems for advanced aerospace applications. This role will contribute to both new product development and ongoing improvements, ensuring successful delivery of hardware from concept through integration and testing.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, innovative, and thrives in a fast-paced environment, collaborating cross-functionally to bring complex mechanical systems from design to deployment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechanical systems and mechanisms, including performing analysis and trade studies to optimize performance, efficiency, and manufacturability
  • Execute detailed engineering design work in accordance with established standards, procedures, and program requirements
  • Collaborate with internal teams to support system integration, assembly, and testing activities
  • Partner with external vendors by defining requirements, reviewing designs, and tracking development progress
  • Develop and maintain mechanical documentation, including requirements, drawings, interface definitions, and test procedures
  • Define and validate mechanical interfaces between subsystems and components
  • Support qualification testing (e.g., vibration, thermal, environmental) and evaluate results
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions
  • Present technical findings and design updates during reviews with cross-functional teams and stakeholders
  • Identify and implement process improvements, new technologies, or innovative design approaches

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field

Experience:

A minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical design and analysis, preferably involving complex systems or hardware development

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Additional experience in aerospace, space systems, or other high-performance environments
  • Familiarity with multidisciplinary systems involving electrical or software components
  • Experience supporting hardware through full lifecycle (design to testing and delivery)

Soft Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams
  • Proven problem-solving mindset and sense of ownership
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy of all documentation and deliverables
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Technology Stack:

  • CAD Tools: Experience with industry-standard 3D modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, NX, or similar)
  • Analysis Tools: Familiarity with engineering analysis methods (e.g., FEA)
  • Data/Documentation Systems: Experience with PLM/PDM systems
  • General Tools: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in both office and laboratory environments
  • Capable of working hands-on with hardware, test setups, and precision instruments
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 lbs as needed
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while working on a computer or performing hands-on tasks
  • Availability for occasional extended hours to support critical project milestones

AST SpaceMobile

View Company Profile

AST SpaceMobile (operating under ast-science.com, originally founded as AST & Science LLC) is the premier, enterprise-grade satellite telecommunications pioneer, space-based cellular broadband innovator, and direct-to-cell infrastructure powerhouse engineered to operate as the definitive, high-velocity non-terrestrial network (NTN), orbital communications array, and global roaming coverage layer for everyday, unmodified smartphones. Founded by telecom veteran Abel Avellan, the company completely eliminates the severe systemic friction of global connectivity gaps—where nearly three billion mobile subscribers face dead zones due to rural terrain, geographic isolation, or natural disasters, and standard mobile network operators (MNOs) struggle with the exorbitant costs of building physical terrestrial towers—by deploying the world's first space-based cellular broadband network. Moving far beyond traditional, passive satellite phone providers or static satellite broadband setups that require specialized ground terminals and heavy hardware, AST SpaceMobile natively unifies ultra-large LEO phased array antennas, standard low- and mid-band terrestrial spectrum integration, and its custom proprietary R&D architecture (powered by the advanced AST5000 ASIC chip) into a high-availability orbital network core. Deploying a historic fleet of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites—including the record-breaking BlueWalker 3 prototype, the Block 1 BlueBirds 1–5, and its next-generation Block 2 BlueBirds boasting massive 2,400-square-foot phased arrays—the platform handles high-concurrency VoLTE calls, 4G/5G streaming data, and real-time text transmissions directly to standard consumer devices. Partnering dynamically with more than 50 major global carriers representing billions of cellular subscribers—including AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone, Rakuten, and Orange—the infrastructure is backed by strategic equity investments, extensive intellectual property with over 3,800 patents and pending claims, and regulatory commercial authority from the FCC. Under the hood, its sophisticated technology core coordinates deep gateway compensation systems to mitigate the Doppler effect and long-range latency in real time, enabling seamless, automated handover from land networks to space arrays without reduced data velocity. What sets AST SpaceMobile apart is its uncompromising dedication to replacing terrestrial network boundaries with absolute global data continuity, universal cellular accessibility, and space-to-phone velocity; by bridging the gap between performance-intensive low Earth orbit satellite manufacturing and the daily mobile habits of citizens worldwide, the enterprise remains the definitive, category-defining cornerstone of modern algorithmic space intelligence and global telecommunications transformation.
