The Role
We're hiring a Marketing Director to own and grow OpenFn's brand, both online and in-person amongst our target audience of Governments, Implementation Partners, and Funders across the Digital Public Infrastructure and Digital Public Goods ecosystem.
OpenFn has a strong existing reputation across the ecosystem, and this hire will be crucial in our next phase of growth. You will make changes to our brand positioning through website updates and marketing campaigns that will demonstrate clear return on investment for the role and its activities. You will help generate new leads for the rest of our growing Business Development unit and increase awareness about the incredible social impact and services our team and product support.
You'll be based in Sub-Saharan Africa, but this is a global role. We have a strong footprint in Africa (French and English), as well as across Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC, Spanish). You will own the strategy and execution of marketing across those regions.
What You'll Be Doing
Own Brand and Positioning
- Own and maintain our OpenFn Website as our primary marketing asset: messaging, structure, content, and conversion paths. We'll provide the necessary tools and capabilities, provided you can show return on investment. The website will be yours.
- Sharpen OpenFn's positioning for our three core audiences: governments, implementation partners, and funders across the DPI and DPG ecosystem.
- Own and maintain our brand and style, including our /openfn-brand-guidelines Claude Skill, ensuring content generated across the team stays consistent and on-brand.
- Ensure our language is credible with ministries and digital transformation units, reflecting that governments own their initiatives and OpenFn supports them.
Generate Demand and Qualified Leads
- Design and run marketing campaigns that generate qualified inbound leads for the Growth Unit, across Africa (French and English) and LAC (Spanish).
- Own the top of the funnel: SEO, AEO, content, email, events, and paid experiments if needed.
- Work with the Head of Growth and Partner Program Director to ensure inbound leads are routed, tracked, and followed up.
- Report on marketing performance against pipeline contribution, showing clear return on the role's activities.
Tell the Impact Story
- Turn our work and partners' work into case studies, blog posts, talks, and campaign materials.
- Build a repeatable content engine: a regular publishing cadence across the OpenFn blog, Community, LinkedIn, and social channels.
- Grow OpenFn's presence and following amongst the DPG and DPI community, including our open-source community.
Show Up in the Ecosystem
- Propose, plan, and run events (in-person or webinars), and represent OpenFn at ecosystem convenings, government digital transformation events, and DPG community moments (10-15% travel).
- Secure speaking slots, panels, and co-marketing opportunities with partners, funders, and DPG peers.
- Build relationships with ecosystem media, newsletters, and movement shapers in the DPI space.
Build the Marketing Function
- Define and own a clear Marketing Strategy for building and positioning the OpenFn Brand, ensuring our capabilities and offering are clearly communicated.
- Help design and own the marketing budget, making deliberate, evidence-based calls about where it goes, with clear evidence of return on investment.
- Put in place the analytics, CRM hygiene, and reporting needed to know what's working.
- Shape what this function looks like as it grows and make the case for additional resources based on clear return on investment.
What You Won't Do
- You won't run a large team. This is a hands-on, build-it-yourself role to begin with. There will be budget you can pitch for, but no direct reports on day one.
- You won't do internal communications or employer branding as a primary focus. You may occasionally help, but your mandate is external.
- You won't close deals. You'll generate and nurture demand; other parts of our Growth Team own qualification, proposals, closing, and ongoing management.
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in marketing, with a track record of owning brand, positioning, and demand generation for a technology product or platform.
- Demonstrable experience generating qualified leads and pipeline, and reporting on marketing's contribution to revenue.
- Familiarity with digital public goods, digital public infrastructure, or open-source software, and the communities around them.
- Strong writing skills: you can produce clear, credible copy for senior government and funder audiences without a copywriter (including keeping LLMs in check so that our brand voice is always nice to read).
- Hands-on experience owning a website end-to-end, including CMS, SEO, AEO, analytics, and conversion.
- Experience executing campaigns across multiple regions and languages.
- Technical understanding of software tools, particularly those used in software automation, AI agentic management, system integration, and workflow automation, sufficient to write credibly for technical and non-technical audiences alike.
- Comfort operating with a small budget and making sharp prioritization calls about where it goes.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small, fully-remote team across multiple time zones.
- Fluent, professional-level communication skills in English and one other language (Spanish or French), with the ability to work effectively across a distributed, multicultural team.
- Reliable access to a quiet, dedicated remote workspace with strong, stable internet connectivity sufficient for daily video calls and cloud-based collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within the social impact sector or with organizations across industries such as government digital transformation, health, humanitarian response, environmental protection.
- Experience in a startup or growing company, where you have helped successfully build out a Marketing function before.
- Experience marketing to public sector buyers, and an understanding of how procurement and donor funding cycles shape demand.
- Experience marketing complex digital transformation, business process transformation, or data integration work.
- Working proficiency in both French and Spanish.
- Experience building a marketing function from a standing start, rather than joining an established one.
- You're a generalist!
Benefits
- Total pay and salary is commensurate with experience, per OpenFn's Equal Pay for Equal Work framework; the detailed pay scales and our approach to fair salaries are shared during the interview process.
- Flexible working schedule.
- Fully remote, with team meetups across Europe and Africa (our last three were in Kigali, Cape Town, and Dakar).
- Exposure to the hottest industry and technology trends and leading health, humanitarian, and government digital transformation interventions in the sector.
- Opportunity for leadership and advancement; you will be a key contributor to our company's strategy and direction.
- The opportunity to shape our strategy and impact millions of lives through our open-source software in a small, mission-driven organization.

OpenFn
View Company ProfileOpenFn is a premier, enterprise-grade integration and automation platform (iPaaS) engineered to orchestrate massive-scale social impact and humanitarian aid ecosystems. Operating as a tech-enabled, open-source hub, the company eliminates the operational friction of traditional, legacy data-exchange modelsâwhich frequently suffer from fragmented connectivity, poor cross-platform interoperability, and high deployment costsâby seamlessly deploying advanced "OpenFn Lightning" telemetry, rigorous data-transformation architectures, and cohesive cross-sector integration frameworks. Moving beyond rigid legacy software-silo paradigms, OpenFn empowers global NGOs, governments, and social-impact organizations to dynamically synchronize their field-data collection, financial-management, and project-monitoring pipelines with elite, scalable, and audit-ready execution. Under the hood, their sophisticated proprietary operational infrastructureâbuilt on a foundation of open-source standardsânatively manages complex global multi-region data ingestion, instantaneous automated mapping/routing, and secure, compliance-hardened workflows, providing the necessary operational foundation to support the modern, data-driven humanitarian economy. What sets OpenFn apart is its uncompromising dedication to frictionless systems-orchestration; by bridging the gap between highly technical, performance-intensive data-exchange demands and accessible, high-velocity digital-integration interfaces, the firm empowers modern humanitarian organizations to radically accelerate their mission-delivery velocity, eliminate systemic coordination-bottlenecks, and build an unassailable foundation for continuous commercial and institutional success in the modern, AI-transformed global-impact landscape.
