Stedi is hiring a Head of Litigation to aggressively protect and expand their freedom to operate in the healthcare sector. Stedi is building the first new healthcare clearinghouse in decades, disrupting an industry dominated by legacy players.
The role involves handling antitrust, information blocking, HIPAA Administrative Simplification, complex commercial disputes, and regulatory challenges related to payments and Treasury. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) mandates standardized X12 HIPAA transactions for insurance exchanges, and clearinghouses like Stedi process the majority of these transactions.
Stedi is facing entrenched incumbents with vested interests in preserving the current structure. The Head of Litigation will own both affirmative and defensive legal strategies, including demand letters, regulatory filings, and litigation. The role is proactive, focusing on shaping disputes before they escalate.
What You’ll Do:
- Own affirmative disputes, from theory development and demand letters to regulatory complaints and litigation.
- Build a record proactively, forming strategies for investigations, preservation, and data analysis to ensure credibility.
- Manage the regulatory-enforcement track, including HIPAA complaints, state insurance regulators, and antitrust authorities.
- Defend the company across commercial, customer, and other disputes.
- Oversee outside counsel selection, scope, and budget, retaining specialists while keeping work in-house where feasible.
- Translate disputes into commercial outcomes, collaborating with the CEO and Legal/Policy teams to determine settlements, contract changes, direct payer connections, or judgments.
- Build and automate legal infrastructure, including litigation holds, preservation, discovery readiness, and matter tracking.
- Keep leadership informed with honest assessments and sophisticated reasoning.
Who You Are:
- At least 12+ years of experience litigating complex commercial disputes, with first-chair experience.
- Strategic thinker, adept at determining when and how to use laws and regulations affirmatively.
- Experience initiating cases, not just defending them.
- Depth in antitrust, unfair competition, complex contract disputes, and regulatory enforcement. Healthcare and technology backgrounds are strongly preferred; experience in other regulated industries (financial services, payments, insurance, telecom) will also be considered.
- Resourceful and cost-conscious, prioritizing in-house solutions where possible.
- Strong judgment and realistic assessment of odds, capable of identifying weaknesses in positions before opposing counsel does.
- Exceptional writer, with work product requiring minimal edits.
- Credible with engineers, able to follow technical conversations about APIs and understand their significance.
- Fast-paced and capable of keeping up with Stedi’s rapid pace.
- Alignment with Stedi’s philosophical standards.
- JD and membership in at least one U.S. state bar.

Stedi
View Company ProfileStedi (operating under stedi.com, legally Stedi, Inc.) is the premier, enterprise-grade programmable healthcare clearinghouse, electronic data interchange (EDI) pioneer, and developer-first health tech orchestration powerhouse engineered to act as the definitive, high-velocity transactions, real-time eligibility checks, and automated claims processing layer for modern healthcare providers, digital health platforms, and revenue cycle management (RCM) applications. Founded in 2017 by tech visionary Zack Kanter, the company completely eliminates the severe systemic friction of traditional healthcare administration—where developers suffer from the immense overhead of ancient X12 EDI file formats, face complex manual insurance enrollment loops, and struggle with high-latency transaction networks—by deploying a code-first, developer-friendly transactional API matrix. Moving far beyond legacy, black-box clearinghouses that rely on brittle SFTP batch processing and paper-heavy workflows, Stedi natively unifies real-time eligibility checks (270/271), multi-format claims submissions (837), digital remittances (835), real-time claim status tracking (276/277), and paper-to-digital claim options into a high-availability developer workspace. Guided by a mission to turn the underlying plumbing of healthcare into a seamless API, the platform empowers rapid-growth health platforms to automate their entire billing loop, scale and configure custom payer rules, and launch native billing integrations with zero legacy friction. Highlighting its category-defining momentum and investor confidence, the high-growth enterprise has raised over $266.5 million in institutional venture capital, backed by a monumental $50 million Series C financing round in March 2026 led by Addition with continued participation from Stripe, Ribbit Capital, Union Square Ventures, First Round Capital, BoxGroup, and Bloomberg Beta, alongside tech luminaries including Tobi Lütke (Shopify), Guillermo Rauch (Vercel), and Karim Atiyeh (Ramp). Under the hood, its technology core utilizes optimized web-ready JSON interfaces that instantly parse and compile raw X12 EDI documents, secure real-time routing nodes to thousands of commercial insurance payers, and a HIPAA-compliant, SOC 2-certified data infrastructure built to process hundreds of millions of monthly transactions with millisecond-level execution latency. What sets Stedi apart is its uncompromising dedication to replacing fragmented, legacy healthcare networks with absolute transactional predictability, a modern developer ecosystem, and automated claim flow integrity; by bridging the gap between performance-intensive structural data routing and the fast-paced, high-overhead realities of modern clinical operations, the corporation remains a definitive cornerstone of modern algorithmic healthtech and global billing infrastructure transformation.
