About the Role
We are seeking a high-caliber Engineering Manager II to lead our Monetization Platform team. This team is the financial heartbeat of HighLevel, owning the entire billing and reselling architecture. Every transaction—from subscriptions and plans to usage-based charges and auto-recharges—flows through systems this team builds. You will manage the critical reselling and rebilling layer that allows our 2M+ businesses to mark up and resell services, ensuring a seamless financial experience for agencies and their clients.
The system processes 160M+ daily events and $4M worth of transactions, requiring extreme operational precision. This is the most high-consequence correctness domain in the company. The platform must be high-throughput, highly available, and demand zero tolerance for inconsistency.
In this role, precision is paramount: a lost usage event is unbilled revenue, while a duplicated one undermines customer trust. You will also oversee the fraud, abuse, and spend-control layer, implementing velocity detection, circuit breakers, and anomaly gates to stop runaway workloads before they impact the bottom line. As an Engineering Manager, you'll lead a team of experienced managers and/or senior engineers (8+) who expect a manager with real technical depth. You'll own architecture and delivery, and partner closely with PMs, Finance, Risk, Support, Phone & WhatsApp channel teams, and payment providers to keep money movement correct, auditable, and fast.
Responsibilities
- Own architecture and scaling decisions for the monetisation platform — ledger and wallet design, subscription and plan management, usage rating, auto-recharge, payment provider integrations, invoicing, and the reselling/rebilling layer
- Guarantee financial correctness as a system property: double-entry ledger integrity, idempotency across every write path, exactly-once handling of usage events, and automated reconciliation with providers and downstream channels
- Own the fraud, abuse and spend-control layer — velocity and anomaly detection, spend caps and circuit breakers, decline-code classification and retry policy, and the gating that protects both HighLevel and its customers from runaway spend
- Work hands-on with technologies like NestJS, Firestore, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, Queuing Systems, Data Warehousing Systems and Service Mesh-based microservices
- Lead design and execution of cross-cutting initiatives to improve reliability, latency, and throughput across time-sensitive APIs and workflows — including the hot paths that gate live message and call traffic
- Drive observability and resilience by evolving our monitoring, alerting (Prometheus/Grafana), and incident response strategies — with financial invariants and reconciliation drift alerted on as first-class signals
- Leverage LLMs and AI tools to write, refactor, test, and debug code efficiently — while implementing guardrails to reduce hallucination and boost reliability
- Partner with product, infra, security, finance and risk teams to ensure data integrity, access control, auditability and compliance (PCI scope, PII handling, revenue reporting)
- Lead and develop engineering managers and/or senior engineers, build leadership pipeline, succession planning and raise the hiring bar
- Develop leaders and senior engineers, build leadership pipeline, succession planning and raise the hiring bar.
- Participate in design reviews, deep dives, and on-call rotations to support a high-bar culture of accountability and operational excellence
- Own multiple teams/products, establish the engineering system, set technical direction, develop leaders
Requirements
- 9+ years of backend engineering experience with min 2+ years of leadership experience, including designing fault-tolerant systems and working on high-scale platforms
- Deep expertise in distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and asynchronous job processing
- Demonstrated ownership of systems with strict consistency and correctness requirements — billing, payments, ledgers, metering, or comparable transactional domains — with fluency in idempotency, exactly-once semantics, reconciliation, and audit trails
- Proven experience optimizing availability, performance, and reliability in real-world systems under load, where the system is on a critical path other products cannot proceed without
- Strong experience with relational and NoSQL data models (especially with complex transactional data)
- Experience leading and earning the trust of a team of experienced senior engineers, including running rigorous technical debate to a decision
- Familiarity with monitoring, SLOs, and root-cause analysis in production environments
- Familiarity with hallucination mitigation strategies (e.g., code constraints, test scaffolding, embeddings, context injection)
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, including with Finance, Risk and Support stakeholders
- A pragmatic, hands-on leader who balances long-term vision with iterative execution
Preferred Experience
- Experience building fraud, abuse or risk-control systems — rules and scoring engines, velocity checks, anomaly detection, or spend and rate governors
- Experience with payment provider integrations (Stripe, Adyen, PayPal, regional PSPs), dunning and recovery flows, chargebacks, or PCI-scoped systems
- Experience with multi-tenant reselling, marketplace or platform billing — markups, revenue share, agency/sub-account hierarchies, or white-label monetisation
- Experience working with AI Tools, Communication APIs (Twilio, Plivo etc)
- Contributions to open-source tools, internal platforms, or engineering blogs
