About Supabase: Supabase (supabase.com) is the premier open-source Postgres development platform, built by developers for developers. We provide a comprehensive, deeply integrated backend solution including transactional databases, instant Auth systems, file Storage, edge computing Functions, Realtime streams, and Vector Search engineered to support rapid enterprise growth. Born remote and open-source first, Supabase has raised over $500M from elite venture partners to scale high-utility tooling for over 500,000 community members worldwide. Supabase equips high-agency people leaders with an uncompromised software canvas to guide high-autonomy engineering teams, influence product roadmaps, and support critical distributed cloud services.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly analytical, connection-obsessed, and systems-minded Engineering Manager to lead core engineering teams across our globally distributed organization under a permanent, full-time fully remote engagement framework. Operating across a single unified management pipeline, you will be strategically matched to specific domains—spanning developer-facing interfaces, core backend microservices, infrastructure platforms, or relational database systems—where your background overlaps most strongly. Shifting completely away from direct solo code contribution or rigid top-down command structures, you will run an active async delivery, culture scaling, and developer infrastructure enablement laboratory—partnering face-to-face with high-autonomy senior ICs, talent acquisition pods, and product management stakeholders. This position requires an engineering leadership veteran with 5+ years of core system building history who handles people, processes, and delivery roadmaps fluidly natively using Backend leadership paradigms, evaluates technical quality standards clearly without introducing operational overhead, and shapes organizational structures confidently from day one.
Key Responsibilities
- High-Trust Team Architecture: Build, manage, and sustain a healthy, high-trust team culture across a remote-first, globally distributed engineering ecosystem operating across disparate time zones.
- People Development & Enablement: Direct recurring 1:1 interactions, performance management cycles, career pathing, onboarding tracks, and general administrative needs for your engineering direct reports cleanly natively utilizing Backend team governance models.
- Hiring and Headcount Strategy: Act as the core Hiring Manager for your technical unit, structuring hiring funnels, screening elite candidates, and partnering with Talent Acquisition to scale headcount and leadership practices.
- Roadmap and Project Optimization: Own your team product roadmap and agile project management systems (via Linear), driving clear accountability, milestone tracking, and cross-team dependency mapping.
- Workflow Intake & Triage Governance: Oversee and manage inbound technical request lines, support tickets, and team Slack triage priorities, deciding what gets routed, accelerated, or pushed back on to preserve team focus and maintain strict SLO limits.
- Incident Command Leadership: Train as an Incident Commander to drive coordination, swift resolution, and blameless post-incident reviews across distributed service interruptions.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- A minimum of 5 years of verified professional engineering background, establishing deep technical credibility with engineers building highly complex cloud systems.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience managing remote engineering groups within a modern SaaS, cloud infrastructure, or developer tools organization.
- Demonstrated capacity driving engineering quality, project velocity, and asynchronous development pipelines natively utilizing Backend coordination strategies.
- Proven track record executing structural performance management, with the ability to cite specific examples of navigating complex professional evaluations and team adjustments.
- Excellent async communication and written precision in English, with a natural preference for default-written context documentation and early risk signaling.
- Comfortable managing high-autonomy, senior individual contributors who maintain strong technical opinions and thrive under coaching rather than micromanagement.
- Location Context: This position operates on a 100% borderless remote layout, welcoming candidates across the United States, Europe, Asia, or LatAm (Remote) to work from anywhere with complete timezone flexibility.
Preferred Strategic Indicators (Nice to Have)
- First-hand experience working directly with relational database architectures (Postgres), cloud scaling, open-source software modules, or complex developer APIs.
- Prior experience navigating hyper-growth startup environments, scaling developer platforms from early configurations to high-volume user layers.
What We Offer
- Vetted, Open-Source Developer Infrastructure Blueprint: A competitive baseline corporate compensation structure aligned with your engineering management depth, backed by standard equity ownership (ESOP) allocations.
- The spectacular professional canvas to shape the engineering management track from the ground up inside a highly visible market-shaping enterprise.
- Profound work-from-home remote parameters offering 100% remote virtual environments, complete workflow trust, and a dedicated coworking allowance or WeWork access anywhere globally.
- 100% coverage of health insurance for employees and 80% for dependents, regardless of your geographic location.
- Generous technology setup allowances, dedicated annual professional education budgets, and an incredible annual company off-site gathering.
