About Hometap
Here at Hometap, we’re collaborative, passionate, and always ready to roll up our sleeves to create solutions that help people get more out of homeownership—and out of life. Our first product, a home equity investment, gives homeowners the opportunity to quickly access the equity they’ve built in their home to pay for what’s most important to them, from handling debt to finally making much-needed renovations, without taking on debt.
The Boston Globe and Forbes have recognized us as a great place to work, and we’ve been honored for our commitment to innovation in the fintech space by Inc. and HousingWire, among others. We provide competitive compensation, healthcare coverage, generous paid time off, a meaningful equity package, and a strong culture with plenty of opportunities for team-building.
Who You Are
As **Counsel, Commercial & Strategic** at Hometap, you’ll serve as a legal advisor embedded across the business. You’ll spend most of your time as a cross-functional partner to teams navigating legal and regulatory questions, with about **30%** of your time focused on commercial and vendor agreements.
You’re a great fit for this role if you bring nuance and practical judgment to business challenges, and are comfortable partnering directly with various departments and department heads. You evaluate risk pragmatically, balancing growth with protecting the organization rather than defaulting to caution. You’re curious and quick to pick up new subject areas, translating legal requirements into clear direction for the business. In this role, you’ll need to be confident making independent decisions, and self-aware enough to know when to ask questions or escalate. As a partner to our business teams, you’ll have a meaningful impact on the work we do internally and for our homeowners.
What You’ll Do
Business Partnership & Strategic Initiative Support (70%)
- Legal Guidance: Advise on diverse legal and regulatory matters, including data privacy, artificial intelligence deployment, and dispute resolution.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Engage regularly with departmental leadership to align legal strategy with broader commercial objectives and serve as a central connector between functional teams and the legal practice.
- Operational Optimization: Partner with legal operations leads to streamline team workflows, optimize automated systems, refine guidance materials, and build scalable processes.
- Pragmatic Risk Assessment: Deliver actionable, solution-oriented advice on daily operational inquiries, resolving unexpected challenges with a focus on risk mitigation and growth.
Commercial & Vendor Strategy (30%)
- Contract Negotiations: Draft, review, and negotiate technology agreements, vendor arrangements, professional service contracts, and strategic partnership agreements.
- Third-Party Risk Management: Collaborate with finance, technology, and operations teams to structure vendor engagements and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
What You’ll Bring
- A **J.D. degree** from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
- 4+ years of relevant legal experience spanning firm, in-house, or hybrid environments; 1+ years in-house experience is preferred.
- Experience in consumer financial services, fintech, mortgage lending, or highly regulated consumer-facing industry strongly preferred.
- Proven experience structuring, drafting, and negotiating commercial agreements and technology contracts (NDAs, SOWs, DPAs, SaaS, vendor contracts, MSAs, etc.).
- A strong desire to stretch across new domain areas—such as AI, privacy, litigation, and legal operations—with ease in managing varied daily responsibilities.
- A business-first approach to law, featuring the ability to evaluate risk thoughtfully and unlock business potential rather than acting as a simple veto point.
- Sound judgment, self-assurance in decision-making, and comfort communicating directly with senior leadership.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of translating complex concepts into plain, accessible language.
- Comfort with ambiguity, strong organizational capabilities, self-motivation, and a collaborative orientation in a fast-paced setting.
