Analytics Engineer
Job Description
Key Skills Required
Master these to land this role
Want to know if you're a match for this job?
Are you an analytics professional who enjoys solving complex business problems—not just building reports?
Cotulla Education is seeking an Analytics Engineer to transform data from across our organization into trusted, scalable analytical products that help leaders understand performance, identify risks and opportunities, and make better decisions.
This role sits at the intersection of data engineering, business intelligence, analytics, forecasting, and strategic decision support. You’ll build the pipelines, data models, dashboards, forecasts, and analytical solutions that power decision-making while serving as a proactive data partner to our Chief Operating Officer (COO) and operational leaders.
We’re looking for someone who can take an ambiguous business question, determine what the data is actually telling us, build the right solution, and communicate the answer in a way that leaders can act on.
If you have experience in analytics engineering, business intelligence, data engineering, advanced analytics, or a related field and enjoy owning problems from question through solution, we’d love to hear from you.
What You’ll Do
- Develop, maintain, and optimize scalable data pipelines, integrations, views, tables, and analytical data models.
- Build dimensional models and semantic layers that create consistent, trusted sources of truth.
- Develop reusable analytical solutions that support reporting, forecasting, and operational decision-making.
- Identify opportunities to replace manual or one-time reporting with durable, automated solutions.
- Document models, transformations, metric definitions, dependencies, assumptions, and limitations.
Own Analytics From Question to Answer
- Serve as a primary analytical partner to executive and operational stakeholders.
- Translate broad or ambiguous business questions into clearly defined analytical requirements and technical solutions.
- Develop deep knowledge of the business processes, systems, workflows, and performance drivers behind the data.
- Independently manage stakeholder needs from initial requirements through delivery, interpretation, follow-up, and ongoing support.
- Turn analysis into actionable recommendations—not just numbers.
Build Dashboards & Business Intelligence
- Design and maintain executive-facing dashboards and reporting products.
- Develop reporting that clearly communicates key performance indicators, trends, exceptions, and business outcomes.
- Create governed business definitions and metrics that provide consistency across dashboards and analyses.
- Partner with technical and functional teams to ensure solutions are reusable, secure, scalable, and aligned with enterprise standards.
Forecast What’s Next
- Build forecasting, scenario-planning, statistical, and predictive models to support operational and financial decision-making.
- Develop optimistic, expected, and conservative scenarios when appropriate.
- Evaluate forecast accuracy and refine methodologies as actual results and business conditions evolve.
- Clearly distinguish between observed results, assumptions, estimates, and modeled outcomes.
- Use exploratory analysis to identify trends, root causes, emerging risks, and opportunities.
Protect Data Quality & Reliability
- Validate data through reconciliation, reasonableness testing, exception review, and comparison to authoritative source systems.
- Identify and resolve data-quality, pipeline, modeling, and reporting issues.
- Establish monitoring and controls that improve the reliability and timeliness of analytical products.
- Recognize when an output may be technically correct but operationally doesn’t make sense.
- Maintain clear documentation so analytical solutions can be understood and supported by others.
Influence Through Data
- Present findings, forecasts, risks, recommendations, and limitations to executive and operational audiences.
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear business language.
- Adjust the level of technical detail based on the audience.
- Partner across Business Intelligence, operations, functional teams, data engineering resources, and external vendors.
- Support and mentor teammates on SQL, data modeling, dashboard design, analytical methods, validation, and stakeholder communication.
What We’re Looking For
Required
- 3+ years of experience in analytics engineering, business intelligence, data engineering, advanced analytics, or a closely related field.
- Advanced SQL skills, including complex transformations, window functions, performance optimization, data validation, and reusable analytical models.
- Experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines and integrations.
- Experience developing executive and operational dashboards and business intelligence products.
- Experience with dimensional modeling, data warehousing, semantic layers, metadata, data lineage, and governed metric definitions.
- Demonstrated ability to independently own an analytical domain or stakeholder relationship from requirements through delivery and ongoing support.
- Ability to translate ambiguous business questions into structured analytical approaches and practical solutions.
- Strong analytical judgment, problem-solving skills, intellectual curiosity, and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and drive work through completion without continuous direction.
Preferred
- Experience with one or more of the following: Snowflake or a comparable cloud data platform.
- Experience with Azure Data Factory, Fivetran, dbt, Python, or comparable data integration technologies.
- Experience with Tableau or comparable business intelligence platforms.
- Python or another analytical programming language.
- Forecasting, scenario modeling, statistical analysis, or predictive modeling.
- Student information systems, CRM platforms, ERP systems, or higher education data.
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Business Analytics, Finance, Economics, or a related field; a combination of education and directly related experience will also be considered.
