Vice President, Finance and Accounting

About the Role: CommonLit is a nonprofit education technology organization dedicated to ensuring that all students graduate with essential skills. We are seeking a Vice President, Finance and Accounting to serve as a strategic partner to our executive team and a steward of our non-profit's financial health. You will lead long-term financial strategy, oversee the accounting and treasury functions end-to-end, and serve as Treasurer of the Board.

What You'll Do

• Lead long-term financial strategy and planning, owning multi-year financial models, scenario planning, and capital allocation strategy.
• Oversee org-wide budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis with a focus on business drivers.
• Lead the organization through the annual audit and Form 990 submission, while overseeing day-to-day accounting operations (AP, AR, GL, payroll).
• Oversee the organization's cash management, monetary policy, and investment approach.
• Provide guidance, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to the finance team.

What You Bring

• Master's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (CPA designation is highly preferred).
• 8+ years of work experience, with at least 5+ years of experience supervising finance staff.
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulations (GAAP).
• Mastery of financial and accounting software, expert in Microsoft Excel and other BI tools.
• Bonus: Experience leading financial operations in an organization with a $25-$50 million annual budget.
