Staff Software Developer, Edge

Wealthsimple is Canada’s largest fintech, managing over $100 billion in assets. The Edge Team is seeking a Staff Software Developer to lead a foundational shift in our architecture: migrating from schema stitching to GraphQL Federation. You will own the GraphQL gateway, public API, and the tooling that helps product developers ship features quickly and reliably. Key Responsibilities Architectural Leadership: Lead the delivery of the GraphQL Federation migration, moving services to a fully federated supergraph. Gateway Operations: Work with GraphQL Mesh and Hive Gateway to enable and operate the federated architecture. Tooling & Automation: Build automation tooling, including AI-assisted migration scripts, to accelerate the transition. Collaboration: Partner with backend teams to evolve their GraphQL schemas and advise on API design standards. Performance: Improve gateway performance, observability, and define best practices for high-traffic production systems. Mentorship: Mentor developers across the organization on GraphQL patterns without requiring them to have deep expertise. Requirements GraphQL Expertise: Deep experience with GraphQL at scale, including Federation, schema design, and performance optimization. API Design: Strong fluency in API patterns across REST and GraphQL, understanding when to adopt standards vs. diverge. Technical Leadership: Proven track record of delivering large, cross-team technical initiatives and coordinating complex migrations. Engineering Fundamentals: Solid experience building and monitoring high-traffic production systems. Communication: Ability to influence without authority and bring developers along through clear communication and documentation. Nice to Have Experience with Ruby and operating Node.js services.
