Software Engineer I

About the Role: Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly. The Bankruptcies & Hardships team (B&H) is a newly formed engineering group responsible for building Affirm’s core servicing platforms that support customers during critical financial moments. You will work on distributed systems, event-driven pipelines, and high-availability services with a strong emphasis on correctness, auditability, and operational excellence.

What You'll Do

• Work collaboratively and proactively with your team and stakeholders to create visibility regarding the risks and trade-offs of your work.
• Strike the right balance of speed and quality, ensuring we hit business goals while protecting systems from downtime.
• Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure operational excellence and system reliability.
• Take a simple problem or business scenario and build a solution that interacts with multiple software components.
• Contribute to a sense of community on your team by engaging in growth and development activities.

What You Bring

• Previous work or internship experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale.
• Experience using Python or Kotlin.
• Familiarity with the building blocks of distributed systems and technologies like AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Comfort navigating a large codebase, debugging others' code, and providing feedback through code reviews.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to support effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
