Job Description

About Stack:

Stack is developing revolutionary AI and advanced autonomous systems designed to enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency of modern operations. Stack's autonomous technology incorporates cutting-edge advancements in artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, and cloud technologies, empowering us to create innovative solutions that address the needs and challenges of the dynamic trucking transportation industry. With decades of experience creating and deploying real world systems for demanding environments, the Stack team is dedicated to developing an autonomous solution ecosystem tailored to the trucking industry's unique demands.

About the Role:

We are looking for a thorough and detail-oriented system engineer to help develop safe, reliable, and performant self driving systems for autonomous trucks that will perform long distance transportation of goods. As systems and safety engineers, we need your expertise to help understand and map product requirements to detailed safety and functional engineering requirements, analyze the system from a hazard analysis perspective, and work with functional hardware and software teams to develop technical approaches, designs, and test strategies. We are mission-driven to develop, test, and field a product quickly that solves our customers’ needs, while also conducting that development to the high degree of engineering rigor necessary for autonomous vehicles to operate safely on public roadways.

This role in particular will focus on the autonomy system of the autonomous truck, with work scope including perception, pose estimation, decision making, and motion control technologies. This role will also involve analyzing the Operational Design Domain and assisting its expansion. This role will require highly cross-functional work in particular with software teams developing algorithms, detailed designs, and implementations of autonomy software and machine learning models. A background or exposure to autonomous vehicle autonomy technologies and components is appreciated. Experience applying ISO 21448, Safety of the intended functionality (SOTIF) is appreciated but not required.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with Product stakeholders to understand product requirements necessary for a commercially successful product and help develop detailed safety and functional engineering requirements that will result in a system that meets the necessary product objectives to be successful in the market.
  • Provide guidance, subject matter expertise, and mentorship to the broader product development organization on systems and safety engineering topics.
  • Identify and implement methodologies for discovery of new/unique behavior scenarios from test data.
  • Develop and guide simulation scenario test case development for evaluating system performance and behavior.
  • Develop AV Behavior requirements and metrics to ensure the self driving system behaves in a safe and performant way.
  • Perform analyses on the Operational Design Domain (ODD), contributing to decisions about what our capability should treat as in-scope.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working across highly cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high degree of engineering rigor.
  • Exposure to, and familiarity with, software engineering across the full lifecycle, including software requirements development, software design, implementation, and unit & integration testing. Prior experience developing software or working closely with software teams.
  • Ability to constructively and critically critique software requirements, designs, implementations, analysis, and software test plans and results, particularly as it relates to the behavior of the vehicle within an Operational Design Domain (ODD).
  • Experience conducting safety analyses such as Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments (HARAs), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA).
  • Experience conducting root cause analysis to determine underlying causes of issues and faults.
  • Work products are developed in detail-oriented and quantitative approaches.
  • Clear, concise communication of technical topics.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards applicable to on-road autonomy such as ISO-26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), UL 4600, or equivalent.
