Senior Manager, Tax Operations, Provision, and Compliance

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation dedicated to creating reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We are seeking a Senior Manager to own and manage the company’s global income tax provision process and tax compliance function.
Reporting to the Tax Operations, Provision, and Compliance Lead, you will build and optimize tax infrastructure as the company scales rapidly. This role is critical for navigating the complexities of a high-growth AI company and ensuring compliance with all applicable tax regulations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Tax Provision (ASC 740) You will own the quarterly and annual income tax provision process. This involves complex calculations and financial reporting.
- Provision Management: Own and manage the quarterly and annual income tax provision process (ASC 740), including current and deferred tax calculations and effective tax rate analysis.
- Reconciliations: Prepare and review tax account reconciliations, including deferred tax assets/liabilities and valuation allowance analyses.
- Financial Close: Support financial close processes related to income tax, including journal entries, flux analysis, and management reporting.
- Uncertain Positions: Manage uncertain tax positions (FIN 48/ASC 740-10).
2. Compliance & Operations You will oversee the complete lifecycle of tax compliance, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Filing: Oversee the preparation and filing of federal, state, and international income tax returns, either directly or through external advisors.
- Calendar Management: Manage the tax compliance calendar to ensure timely filing of all required returns, extensions, and estimated payments.
- Audit Support: Collaborate with external auditors on income tax-related audit requests and ensure timely completion of deliverables.
- Automation: Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities within the tax function.
3. Strategic Partnership
- Cross-Functional Work: Partner with Legal, Finance, and People teams on tax implications of business transactions, equity compensation, and international expansion.
- Legislation: Monitor and assess the impact of new tax legislation and regulations on the company’s tax position.
- Incentives: Support tax-related aspects of R&D tax credit studies and other tax incentive programs.
Requirements
- Experience: 10+ years of progressive income tax experience, with a required mix of public accounting (Big 4 preferred) and in-house corporate tax experience.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or Finance. A CPA certification and/or advanced degree in taxation/accounting is expected.
- Technical Expertise: Strong technical knowledge of ASC 740, including experience with income tax provisions for multi-state and international operations.
- Software Proficiency: Proficient in tax provision software (e.g., Corptax, OneSource) and ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, Workday).
- Soft Skills: Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in high-growth technology companies or pre-IPO environments.
- Experience with international tax matters (Transfer Pricing, GILTI, FDII).
- Familiarity with R&D tax credits (Section 41) and Section 174 capitalization.
- Experience with equity compensation tax implications (ISOs, NSOs, RSUs).

- Hybrid Model: Staff are expected to be in one of the offices at least 25% of the time.

- Compensation: Annual Salary range of $230,000 - $300,000 USD.
